A provocative work that challenges the traditional and widely accepted principles of business management — and proves that they are outdated, outmoded, or simply don’t work

Do open floor plans really work? Are there companies that put their employees’ welfare first, and their clients second? Are annual performance reviews necessary?Dr. David Burkus is a highly regarded and increasingly influential business school professor who challenges many of the established principles of business management. Drawing on decades of research, Burkus has found that not only are many of our fundamental management practices wrong and misguided, but they can be downright counterproductive. These days, the best companies are breaking the old rules. At some companies, e-mail is now restricted to certain hours, so that employees can work without distraction. Netflix no longer has a standard vacation policy of two to three weeks, but instructs employees to take time off when they feel they need it. And at Valve Software, there are no managers; the employees govern themselves. The revolutionary insights Burkus reveals herewill convince companies to leave behind decades-old management practices and implement new ways to enhance productivity and morale.

You WILL be inspired!!!
By Crazy Cat Lady
THE BEST material out there in showcasing how today's most innovative, forward thinking, most successful companies are ensuring their success by making their employees come first. Shared some bullet points of this book at an all managers' meeting and my excitement was infectious. I work for a large global corporation, and my store manager took many of the practices presented here to the Service Office, and some policies have already been implemented, in part. There's a take-away for everyone in these pages, from top management to the lowest position. A most inspiring, fast and easy read that should be required reading for everyone in retail, hospitality, food service, online business.....everyone! I have purchased two loaner copies for my coworkers, and have given this gem of a book as a gift......cannot recommend it more highly.

As someone who heads an organization and reads quite a bit about leadership, I really enjoyed this book because it operated on two levels for me. It gave me plenty of affirmation for some of the things I'm trying, but at the same time it introduced me to some new ideas and examples. Now I can make my cases more strongly. So while it didn't stretch/challenge me the way I like for books to, it still provided great fodder for thought. And if someone is not well versed in current thinking on new leadership models, it's a great, thorough and thoughtful introduction.

Great book - Must read for those in knowledge based industries
By Davis Liu
Thoughtful well researched book on very different ideas on how to unleash the full potential and engagement of a workforce increasing based in a knowledge based economy. Must read for those thinking of a better way than the traditional management tools of command and control. Highly recommended.
