interesting topic but superficial treatment

Pricing is a key topic for modern marketing practitioners, especially with the generalization of data collection and simplification of transactions. This book gives a good overview of the general methods used by pricing managers to adjust prices. However the treatment is outdated and a bit superficial - bringing a deluge of examples and few fundamental principles. In the end it makes for a good casual read but can hardly be recommended as a guidebook to pricing. For a more in-depth analysis, see instead The Strategy and Tactics of Pricing (Nagle, Thomas).

The real Gone with the Wind

If you are a film buff or a Civil War history buff, you will find this a fascinating read. I do confess that while reading, I was comparing the text with the visions of Gone With the Wind.
The Civil War had disasterous consequences for the South. After an auspicious beginning, by 1863, the true toll was becoming only too evident in human and commercial costs. Atlanta, a community that had started to grow in the 1850's was supercharged when war was declared. It had so many things going for it, including location, that it became a hub. In fact, it was the second most important city in the South. With growth came wealth and Atlanta flourished in the early stages. Even the Unionists either supported the Confederate cause or stayed under the radar. By the third year, deprivations were felt by all and the flood of human misery swarming the city made life less pleasant. But it was not until the city was threatened by the Union forces that things got truly nasty.
We have seen the burning of Atlanta, thanks to David O Selznick, but the tales of the event, in the words of those who were impacted, are equally, if not more, powerful..
Ms. Venet has done an admirable job lacing together the stories of Atlantans during her rise, her pre-eminence and her emergence from the ashes like a phoenix after the war. It is sad that so little of what was there before no longer exists. Thanks to books such as this, we can still appreciate what that world was like.

Atlanta, Then and Now

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Venet at an event at the Atlanta History Center and purchased A Changing Wind from a local bookstore. The narrative in this book is brilliant. She weaves a story line which tells us of Old Atlanta and how the town has evolved into the global city we love today. This is a book for anyone who loves history or contemporary. I highly recommend it.

Definitely readers haven't picked this book up to know about life of Buddha just like a reader interested in knowing about histo

He should have called his book as " A Buddhist version of Indian History" than Social History Of India.This so called history book has dedicated 200 pages to underline the fact that Buddhism is the one which magically transformed and created our history. Though I don't have any issue with the Lord Buddha or The Buddha ,author didn't have to invite readers in a betraying title and didn't even think that the readers ain't fool to understand that it is biased.Who else in the world would come up with a Social History of any nation with dialogue deliveries of any religious icons,be it The Buddha , Jesus ,Mohammed, Krishna or anyone, in hundreds of pages? Definitely readers haven't picked this book up to know about life of Buddha just like a reader interested in knowing about history of Europe wouldn't be interested in knowing about Jesus's life.

Interestingly most of the citations of this book whenever he tries to protest against Hinduism are from Rev fathers of churches or American or European Indologists which are ridiculous.He frequently mentions about Brahminic Hinduism.What should then non-brahminic Hinduism comprise of?

Author found that Ramayana and Mahabharata were made popular in India because of Ramanand Sagar and Ravi Chopra, the TV series makers! Who in film industry would spend crores to create an impression or to preach any in any culture without studying the public interest in that area?Film makers or episode makers would only exploit or use the already prevailing interests for their marketing.If not why nobody came up with any great serials of the Buddha and try to appeal the majority?Films can invite audience only if the subject is interesting and close to their hearts.

The line "Shasta is exclusively and entirely a Kerala god" is hilarious. I didn't know that god can be exclusive to a particular region!

He has given various versions of Ramayana from Buddhist stories and Jataka stories but won't accept Valmiki Ramayana.According to him, the most acceptable version of Ramayana is Rama was Sita's brother and after completing 14 years of exile he married Sita. Also has mentioned such type of marriages between siblings are not against morality too. Author should understand that Ramayana is the history and stories of an ideal king,ideal brother,ideal husband,ideal wife and ideal faith. Nothing will fall apart in believing in that.I recommend you to read the book by Pushkar Bhatnagar for this case-Dating the Era of Lord rama. And for your knowledge this is based on western planetarium software too.So if you dare to question this,do it after reading it once.

Sadasivan, do you have enough bravery to question any other religious books?Secularism is the shroud which acts differently to majorities and minorities now.The shroud is so weak and let any stab go inside when it is Hinduism. Any European,Hindu or non-Hindu can come and pierce it. On the other hand, things would turn bloody when the questioned book is of other religions.

There is a Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code which criminalizes "deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class of citizens” .(Remember that incident in February 2014, as part of settlement with plaintiff to a lawsuit brought before an Indian district court, The Hindus-An Alternate History by Wendy Doniger was recalled by Penguin India.)

1.Calling Siva as a blood thirsty and naked being formed by the Brahminic Hindus
2.Findings like Vishnu being created to oppose Buddhism.
3.Clucking his tongue to the great epics-Ramayana and Mahabharata and attributing its success and remembrance in the heart of millions to Ramanand Sagar.
4. Proclaiming that Sita was Rama's sister.

This itself is a crime as per Indian Law. Still this book is available!

Excellent dictionary with excellent definitions

Things I like about the dictionary:
*Excellent definitions (the definitions in this book are some of the best I've read; they are accurate and really give the student a sense of what the particular Chinese word/character means)
*Example sentences/phrases with Pinyin (unlike the Concise English-Chinese Chinese-English Dictionary (ISBN 0195911512) which does NOT have Pinyin for its example sentences/phrases, this one does, with English translation as well; this if very helpful when one wants to see how the character/word is used)
*Comprehensive (according to the dictionary itself, the work contain over 10,000 characters; but this is not for the scholar of Chinese, for as the preface states, "The dictionary is a small-sized reference book for learning Chinese, chiefly for teachers and students in primary schools and middle schools, and for intermediate-educated readers as well.")
*The original Chinese text is included (this is actually a translation of an actual Chinese dictionary)
Things I don't like about this book:
*All the definitions under the head character is in one paragraph (unlike the Concise English-Chinese Chinese-English Dictionary (ISBN 0195911512) which list each character combinations of a particular character on separate line, this dictionary does not. Thus, all the information is in one paragraph, making it rather difficult to find the character combination (i.e., the word) one is looking for)
*Lack of some character combination (perhaps because the book is a translation of an actual Chinese dictionary, it does not include some important character combinations; this is very unfortunate, for it is an excellent dictionary overall)
This dictionary and the Concise English-Chinese Chinese-English Dictionary (ISBN 0195911512) are an excellent combination.

I am just starting the study of Mandarin Chinese with traditional characters.

I just wish to emphasize what a previous reviewer correctly said: this dictionary is based on simplfied characters, as used in mainland China and Singapore. The radical and character index tables list the characters according to the number of strokes in the simplified character forms. The traditional characters are listed in each entry, but it is not easy to find them if you don't know the pinyin pronunciation or the simplified form. The radical table also has cross-reference entries for the traditional forms of the radicals, but this only helps a little.

The other version of this dictionary, Xinhua Dictionary with English Translation, published by Commercial Press, Hong Kong, ISBN 9620702530, is almost the same product, but based on traditional characters, as used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and many expatriate communities. Its radical and character index tables list the characters by the number of strokes in the traditional character, with the simplified character listed in the entry if there is one. The radical table in this version has cross-reference entries for the simplified forms of the radicals. And as the previous reviewer said, this version has nicer printing and binding.

I purchased both, but you may not need both, depending on your own requirements.

I have found this book to be very helpful because it has what many Chinese dictionaries do not have: a breakdown of every Chinese character into its "zhuyin" form. Most dictionaries limit their pronunciations to just the "pinyin." However, in order to pronounce the words as accurate as possible, it is best to use the "zhuyin" form. Knowing the "zhuyin" form will also help if you ever need to look up a word in a Chinese dictionary according to its pronunciation. Every word in this book is alphabatized by its "pinyin," but it lists each word's Chinese character first, then the "pinyin," and then its "zhuyin." One minor thing about the book is how it lists the simplified characters. In most cases it provides the traditional form, but I would prefer it list the traditional characters first. The print is not too small and easy to read. If you need to look up the definition of a Chinese word, then this is a great resource for looking it up using English letters.
