Parody of a name but unique story

I admit, I thought this was a silly parody of Captain America at first, but I was pleasantly wrong.

In this story, Captain China, formerly known as Liberator and ranked Major, is brought from cryogenic sleep to fight China's enemies or at least that's what he would prefer whereas his superiors see him more as a PR stunt to show China's strength. The name initially gives a sense of rip-off, but it's explained as more of a calculated PR move by the Chinese leadership. Captain China of course does mirror some aspects of Captain America in the movie winter soldier though in the sense that the protagonist comes from a different time and is facing a bit of a culture shock (but hey this came from the year 2012 whereas the winter soldier came from 2014 so no rip off here). It's worth noting that one of the major characters in this story worked in the wrestling industry and now works for Captain China as his PR manager of sorts.

That said, Captain China has all the underpinnings of a America-style superhero, from the macho attitudes, the stoic resolve, the mystery shrouded around his past, and the disregard for authority figures. He may be held under a tight leash, but he still defies authority to save lives, kick butt and take name in this first volume. Where he does separate from the traditional American superhero however is his ruthlessness in regards to villains. Hell, he shot and killed a thief during his introduction who turns out to be hired secretly by the PR manager to cause a commotion in front of Captain China and the press. His commander is shocked at how trigger happy Captain China is.

At the Author's notes, the Author notes that he got the idea originally as a joke and parody, but it evolved to something more when he visited China in 2009 and fleshed out the idea. China is currently in the midst of a strange hybrid of communist ideals and market capitalism. This story beautifully displays the various sides of China at once with the old ideals Captain China holds, the PR maverick managing Captain China's brand, and the military commander in charge of Captain China. A great read, will definitely recommend.

A Fun Read and a Neat Concept

I gotta admit right off the bat, wasn't expecting much from this. The English preview articles made it sound like it was a big propaganda comic. After having read the first two volumes, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and happy to be proven wrong. Captain China has been awoken in modern day China, to help combat new threats to it's safety in a world of superpowered individuals/high-tech criminals/etc. There's just one catch, Captain China was born and raised during Mao's China, and is a staunch Communist. Now he finds himself in a China he hardly recognizes, in a world stage that is vastly different from the one he remembers. He was given these abilities to fight the Capitalist powers, and yet his first real assignment is to protect the US President as he visits, something unheard of back in the days of 'Cultural Revolutions'. And the cultural/generational clashes only keep piling up. The P.R. stunt with a (unbeknownst to the Captain) staged robbery that backfires is a great example of this.

So it's very interesting to see how this is playing out. He's as "A Man From Out Of Time" as Captain America, and like Cap is having to cope with this massive change in his life, and adjust to this new world. So far it's been very exciting to read, and has some really great moments, like when (in issue 2) the Captain finds his image has been made into a toy to be marketed.

Just wish Excel Comics would release new English language issues.

Not your usual hero comic!

After reading this book, I have come to the conclusion that this book contains everything that the industry lacks these days: SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. You can read it and be amused by it. You can read it and be provoked by it. You can read it and be given cause to stop and think. But you will NOT read it and feel ripped off by it. You can tell a lot of thought went into this book, and in the 41 pages a LOT of ground is covered, but not too much that you're left scratching your head. The artwork is excellent. The hi-rez images on the Kindle Fire look brilliant. The writing isn't cheesy. This is a fun book worth reading. Support the little guys!

A fast-paced, hilarious how-to packed with great suggestions

This is a rollicking, informative rant that's part how-to, part stand-up, and part manual on what you need to do get a date or a hookup with the girls you're texting.

I almost didn't buy this book because, duh, there's a LOT of free information on the internet on texting do's and don'ts (some of it great some not so much). But I went with it, mostly because I've seen the author on TV before and he pretty much knows what he's talking about.

I don't know that the author breaks much new ground here (although the part on how to get girls to send you naked pics is one for the books) but there's a certain genius to the book. First, the way it's laid out. It starts with the premise that you don't have her number and want it, so there's a chapter on how to get it ("How to get a girl's phone number without getting shot down"). It's incredibly clever.

The book then moves toward the two most likely scenarios--you got her number but she's not that into you or she is. From there, the advice starts rolling and it never stops--along with the jokes, pratfalls, examples of what not to do and other funny devices that had me in stitches. I think this is the thing that surprised me most--how damn funny the book is.

The book ends with a few hundred pre-written texts you can send, depending on what you want to achieve. Some real gems in there.

I would have liked to seen more problem scenarios but otherwise this book's a total keeper. I feel like my texting game just went up five notches.

Chock full of examples and funny as sh*t !

I'm not a big texter, but beginning to realize that's like someone in the 20th century saying I'm not a big electricity person. Many of my texts hit a dead end after 4 or 5 texts, and several of the women I dated complained about how I don't text often enough. This book offers some good tips on how to avoid that routine. Some of the ones that stuck out are not writing open-ended texts and being more specific, like instead of "What are you doing tonight?" with "Let's go see that new Drew Berrymore movie tonight and see if we're becoming a romantic comedy." LOL, its a funny book.

One of the best features is the listing of clever texts at the back of the book. It's like an index of things to send, including a small catalog of emoticons that will literally make you laugh out loud. The author says, "Make her laugh and you're halfway up her leg." Well, I used some of those texts and I swear I was 2/3 up her leg.

This helped a lot and I'm a pretty good texter...

This is a subject dear to my heart. I'm a pretty romantic guy, and because of this I was at first reluctant to send text messages to a woman that I was interested in. I thought it was more appropriate to call her, or even give her short hand-written notes or letters, and both of those are still effective and something I still use. But then I realized that text messages can be our modern version of a love letter, and can be as affectionate as the love letters that our grandparents exchanged while they were dating.

I've been told I am an exceptional texter by more than one woman, so I didn't buy this book to get any hints. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical that a strategy to send good text messages could be bottled like a magic potion (I think it has to be natural). What I found is a kindred spirit that appreciates the effectiveness of thoughtful texting, and someone who verbalizes some of my thought process when I use text messages to flirt.

Michael Alvear walks guys through each step of the early stages of dating, from getting a woman's number to playing it cool with the post-first date text messages. It's hilarious that he's even got sections on how to text "If The Date Did Not Go Well, But You Want Another" and "If The Date Didn't Go Well And You Don't Want Another---But She Does" which teach you how to score with and/or discard a woman without being a total douche.

There was plenty in the book that I disagreed with or didn't apply to my life. I'm still too old-school to ask a woman I'm interested in to send me nude pics, so I couldn't really wrap my head around Alvear's tips to accomplish that. Although, some of what he wrote made me realize that there is more room for sexting in my texting since I tend to keep my text messages PG-13.

My biggest beef with the book were the suggestions Alvear offered for clever texts. Some of them were funny, some were corny, but like I said, I think the clever has to come naturally or else it will come off as fake and scripted. There's a reason why pick-up lines usually don't work for guys, and it's the same thing with texting. When it comes to flirting, you either got it or you don't.

Despite my issues with the suggested canned text messages, I think this book can help guys who don't "got it" to find their "voice."

About the Author
Dr. Joshua Eldridge began working with gymnasts in 2010 during a visit to his wife’s gym. One of the coaches asked if he could examine one of the injured gymnasts. With the help of Jenn Sonneveldt from Sky Valley Gymnastics and his wife Sara, the head coach at the gym, they developed a program for working with athletes directly in their gym. This program has expanded to several gyms and Dr. Eldridge travels the country giving clinics on nutrition, injury care, and landing technique.
Dr. Eldridge is the inventor of The X Brace, designed to help alleviate the pain caused by Sever’s disease. He has also assembled a protocol that is key in eliminating Sever’s disease and returning athletes to the gym. Dr. Eldridge’s protocol was published by the ACBSP and presented at The Olympic Training Center in 2013.
In 2013, Dr. Eldridge was named to the USA Gymnastics National Health Care Referral Network and was invited to speak at the 2013 USA Gymnastics National Congress, USAG Region 1 Congress, and USAG WA State Clinic.
In early 2012, Dr. Eldridge developed Stay Fueled, a nutrition program for busy families with athletes. Stay Fueled makes nutrition planning and implementation easy, fun, and extremely affordable for gymnasts and their families.
In 2012, Dr. Eldridge spent a 2 week rotation at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs working with our nations elite athletes as they trained for the 2012 Olympic Games. He had the privilege to work with many sports including men’s gymnastics, para-olympic cycling, wrestling, figure skating, fencing, bobsled and many more. He’s brought back many of the techniques learned there and has implemented them into the gyms in which he has partnered with.
In December 2013, Dr. Eldridge was a member of the emergency medical team for the Dew Tour in Breckenridge, CO.
Dr. Eldridge has had the honor of serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan and volunteered in both wars to serve soldiers at troop medical clinics on top of his regular service. During these times, he served the ultimate athletes, while learning incredible attributes of athletes under extreme stress conditions.
Dr. Eldridge is an avid sports enthusiast, is husband to one of Washington State's finest gymnastics coaches, and has four beautiful children.

Dr Josh is my go to person for any of my daughter injuries!!

The are not words to express how grateful I am to have met Dr Josh and to have his amazing book to help when my 2 gymnasts daughters have a problem.
His regimen for severes has been nothing short of a miracle for my daughter who has been suffering from it.
Her pediatrician said she has planters fasheitis. I just knew it wasn't right so I went to his book and my daughter had everything pointing to severes. So we immediately started his suggested regimen and she was doing better within a few days.
Now 3 weeks later she is almost completely pain free and just competed in her level 8 State meet and qualified for Regionals.
I know without this she wouldn't have been able to compete because her pain was so bad.
I love this book, the nutrition website and blogs from Dr Josh. His passion, expertise, and knowledge is hands down the best and I am grateful for all he is doing to keep our gymnasts healthy inside and out.

Excellent resource for any gymnat, coach or parent of a gymnast!

The Gymnast Care Book on Injuries is a wonderful resource for anyone in the gymnastics world! The physical skills and training that girls and boys go through can also put a lot of strain on the body. The book is broken down into easy to follow chapters that focus on specific areas. Dr. Eldridge provides easy to understand treatment and strengthening exercises that address the specific injuries gymnasts have. I have used the book for both my daughters and recommended it to all our coaches and parents.

As a parent I appreciate all the conditioning exercises to prevent certain injuries from even occurring. As well as the importance of nutrition that is stressed in the book.

A Much Needed Book!

As the mother of a young gymnast who has had to sit out for pain, I went looking for help; I found it in The Gymnast Care Book on Injuries. It is an excellent resource to have at home for problem areas and for everyday preventative stretching. I even took the book to my daughter's physical therapist, an ex-gymnast herself, and she the protocols in the book and the way it was laid out. I would recommend it to anyone in sports.

Not recommend

If you already know the clinical trials operations process, this is a decent reference book. If you are trying to learn this process, it is unhelpful. There are no graphics that outline the clinical process methodology to help explain the text. And some of the terminology doesn't match with what other sources. A few ppts would have gone a long way.
It's a confusing book if the reader is new to the area.

Simon Singh is a science journalist and TV producer. Shhhhhh!

Like all narrative non-fictional works that, eventually in this case, deal with technical subjects whose details are beyond the scope of the non-specialist reader, this book attempts to strike a balance between two extremes, between a book so chock-full of technical detail that it reads like a textbook and a book that skimps so completely on the heart of the matter at hand that it can only be described as fluff. Singh has done a remarkable job in balancing the two here, it seems to me, and the book is worth any reader's time whose interest is piqued by cryptography.

Singh is singularly aided by his subject matter here. This book was recommended to me by a fellow poster on a crossword puzzle blog which I frequent, as a daily solver of the New York Times crossword. The discussions on the blog vary from the whimsical to the technical with all manner of things mooted. So goes Singh's book as well. But what makes this possible is that cryptography and cryptanalysis, for most of human history, has been no more complex, au fond, than a very difficult crossword puzzle. And one is not surprised to see a crossword used during WWII by the British to test potential candidates for work at top secret Bletchley Park, which was responsible for cracking Germany's "Enigma" code. The crossword is provided in the book and was jolly fun to solve.

It seems to me that up to the Vigenère polyalphabetic coding, known for centuries as "le chiffre indéchifferable", anyone with an interest in this book could understand and create such a cipher and write an encrypted message in it. Indeed, it's in deciphering such messages without the "keyword" that the technical going gets somewhat involved and perhaps beyond the ken of some readers not familiar with basic statistical analysis, and, not coincidentally, this decipherment of such encryptions is where maths starts to predominate. But it's certainly not difficult to understand the concept of how these encryptions are deciphered, it's merely very tedious and painstaking to do it as Charles Babbage finally did in the 19th Century.

Up to this point, for this reader in any event, no trade-off was necessary and Singh is free to fill his tale of codes and ciphers with histories which hinge upon them, starting with the life and death of Mary, Queen of Scots. Also, he makes an elegant segue in the tale of how the Linear B tablets were finally translated, and the toing and froing of certain egotistical archaeologists etc. - It should be noted here the final decipherment and translation of Linear B was the cumulative work of men (and one woman) of genius who were linguistic prodigies. - Again, pass the 19th century and the non-specialist becomes more than a tad lost in the, literally and figuratively, nuts and bolts of Enigma machines and multi-lingual scholarship and fluency.

Thus, it's no surprise that the ending of the book was the weakest part for me. Though it must be said that Singh goes out of his way to use "Alice, Bob, Eve" analogies to make the concepts clearer most effectively, being able to do what the main players in the tale are doing is far beyond the amateur's grasp. Also, the book is thirteen years old and the final sections dealing with computer encryption seem a bit dated already.

In sum though, a very pleasing, well-written book about the perennial human need to keep matters secret.

A little outdated for modern topics

I really enjoyed the historical perspective of encryption and codes. Simon Singh does a great job of showing how both cryptography techniques were created and broken through history. As someone involved in the computer industry, however, the more "modern" sections are showing their age. This is a fast moving area. It would be great to see the book updated with more context of state actors and the revelations that have surfaced over the last ~10 years.

I read the condensed version a decade ago and loved it, so decided to get the full book now. To be honest, I think the condensed version is better and more appealing to non-geeks, but I have enough geek in me to not be bored by the TL;DR version.
What's great is that encryption still hasn't moved on much since the book was written so it is still very relevant. The discussion about quantum computers and quantum encryption is great introduction to stuff that is becoming a reality today.

to provide software and hardware support for small business and residential users.

He holds several certifications from CompTIA and Microsoft and enjoys working

with technology and teaching others how they can make technology work for

them.

Alan has been the technical editor on other books from Que Publishing, including

Using Windows 8 and Microsoft Project 2013 In Depth. When not working

with computers, he enjoys working on projects in his cabinet shop. Alan lives

in northern Michigan with his wife, Pam, and their two children, Joshua and

Jonathan.

Chris Roth has always enjoyed creating pictures of any kind and absolutely enjoys

the combination of computer technology with graphics. He has been working

with Visio since The Beginning in 1992, when he was part of the Visio 1.0 team at

then-extant Visio Corporation. Since then, he’s continuously been busy helping

customers incorporate diagrams, drawings, and visualizations into their daily business

and to develop custom graphical solutions based on Visio.

A Microsoft Visio MVP since 2002, he has presented sessions at several Visio conferences

and has written more than 250 articles about Visio for his “Visio Guy”

website (www.visguy.com), which he launched in 2006.

Originally from Seattle, he currently lives with his wife and baby daughter in

Munich, Germany. Away from family, laptop, and relaxing Bavarian beer gardens,

he plays trombone with the TT Orchestra and the wind ensemble Pullacher

Blasmusik.

I don't have good enough eyes for the Kindle version.

The information is all there, but I had difficulty viewing the illustrations on a 7" Kindle Fire. Even making the font bigger does not enlarge the figures. I looked at a co-workers copy of this manual, and I believe I will order that form of this item and forget the Kindle version.

More of a reference guide than a tutorial or training manual as expected.

While it seems to be a good reference book, it really is not a training guide/tutorial as expected for a book with this title.
I ended up buying the Lynda.com Visio 2013 video series and found it very good as a beginner's tutorial.
