About the Author
Paul Mumford is one of the longest-serving fund managers in the UK, with 50 years' experience in the markets as a stockbroker and fund manager. He runs the Cavendish Opportunities Fund, AIM Fund and Select Fund, having launched the first in 1988 as the Glenfriars Opportunities Fund. He is a stock picker who aims to find shares in undervalued companies and often ends up swimming against the tide and buying unloved shares. Paul has three daughters and two granddaughters. His outside interests include bridge - he has obtained the rank of Life Master - supporting live music at local venues, and following two football teams as a season ticket holder.

Too much for too little

Boring. A lot of examples but which are not deeply analyzed. The first part of the book describing the bio of the author is interesting. After that a story of the markets doesn't bring anything new and a story of his multiple investments is difficult to ingest. The positive point is the candor of the author.

I agree with the first reviewer. This is more or less a high level history of the author's career. He lists his many Investments over a decades long timeline, without going into much depth. I didn't find anything useful in this book, nor did I find the story all that compelling

Not my cup of tea

I rarely read fiction that features a "star" as a main character. This book reminded me why...I simply don't find them interesting. Nice writing, but when the only character you hold any empathy for is a kid, and you hate kids, you know you're out of your depth. Simply wasn't my cup of tea.

An Absolute Masterpiece of Horror

This is a terrific horror novel. It takes place in an old mansion (of 160 rooms) in the Adirondack mountains that hides an intriguing and unqiue dark secret to it. The lead characters are a young woman, newlywed to a famous rock musician and her son from a previous relationship. The attempt to merge the three into a family is difficult. Things get worse when the boy is visited by spectral beings in the house. I have reread this novel on several occasions and enjoyed it each time. The blurb from publishers weekly above appears to be from some other book entirely and should be discounted. This is a relatively short haunted house style novel that will keep you hooked from beginning to end and deserves to be remembered as one of the greats.

If Winchester House and Hill House Had A Baby, It Would Be Lake House!

Lake House is like some dark amalgamation of the Winchester House and Hill House. The angles are all off, there seems to be more room on the inside than the outside indicates, and Lake House has its own dark history. Unfortunately, most of the family staying over the summer are not aware of it.

I won't delve into the story description too much, since the synopsis already does that. I will say that I thought this was an extremely well written, fast paced story. It doesn't have the literary impact of say, Hill House, but it does indeed have an impact.

I loved the 2-3 story lines going on because they always left the me guessing. The character interactions between the wife and her new husband were kind of cliche, but I didn't mind that so much because the narrative only stayed with them briefly and then quickly moved on to the mysteries within Lake House. There were a few of them, and they were out of this world.

For me, it's rare that the ending of a haunted house story delivers. Usually the endings are sort of hokey and they're mostly the reason I don't read many HH tales these days. This book was a delight, well written and well paced, surprising and just plain fun.

Highly recommended to fans of literary horror fiction and haunted houses!

Poignant and compelling - Artfully captures the spirit and power of the Gettysburg Address.

Through Lincoln's own words and telling contemporary photographs, Jack Levin captures the raw emotion and historically charged atmosphere of an era when America was literally tearing itself apart. He goes beyond the commonplace telling of how Lincoln's address came about and what it came to mean, and gives us the sensory and emotional experience of an eye witness to momentous history in the making.

This book should be a cornerstone in every American's education about the times and events that have made us the nation we are today. It is also a telling reminder of what each generation must fight to preserve in order to give to future generations the legacy of American exceptionalism.

Short but Powerful, Just Like Lincoln's Words at Gettysburg

I cannot do this book justice with just some words on a screen... I am 27 years old and it takes alot for me to get a lump in my throat, but this book has done it as I sit here at work paging through this treasure. Over my life, I have read the words that Lincoln spoke at Gettysburg, but none have so deeply penetrated the depths of my soul as the format of this book. With each turn of the page comes another powerful line accompanied by another powerful image that reminds us that the Civil War was not some fable that took place in Ancient History. No. Jack E. Levin shows us that America, OUR America, OUR country, is not merely a geographical "place" on the globe, but rather an idea, a mindset, a unique human experience and that our history is one of uniquely AMERICAN character. This book should be required reading in ALL public schools. This book is not someone's subjective point-of-view passed off as fact. Quite the contrary. 'Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address Illustrated' is the words of one divinely-inspired President, accompanied by the incredibly detailed photographs of past Americans who carried out and who died for the belief in humanity's ONLY opportunity to live as God intended, freely. The book is beautiful to look at

The book is beautiful to look at, and very informative. The accompanying CD, by the vocal ensemble "Blue Heron", performs 17 of the pieces discussed in the book; I found the performances to be lovely, and the recording technically excellent.

As for its being "low-brow", as another review complained, the author does make the occasional topical wisecrack. To which I say, "Chill out, dude!"

I'm looking forward to giving the book a second, detailed reading. In the meantime, it will rest on my shelf between Grout's "History of Western Music" and Tufte's "Envisioning Information", two classics in whose company "Capturing Music" belongs.

Can't be better

The development of music notation that, for the most part, clearly allows pitch, rhythm, tempo, articulation, dynamic and timbre, to be scored and then newly performed from the score -- without the direct instruction of someone already familiar with the music -- is one of the great accomplishments of Medieval Western Civilization. But because of the history's complexity it's both usually skipped in general introductions to music and treated only minimally in the training of professional musicians in undergraduate programs. "Capturing Music" brilliantly corrects this problem.
In wonderfully readable prose, easily accessible to the amateur, Kelly traces the story of notation's development from fragments in the Middle East and the Hellenistic Levant to the polyphonic musical monuments of the late Middle Ages. Although essential to the understanding of notation, in previous books on the subject accompanying illustrations have been both minimal and usually in black and white. But here we have copious full color illustrations and, as in the case of one of Machaut's ballades " Biaut�. ." and Cordier's rondeau "Belle, bonne" we have splendid full color reproductions of works that are often referenced but, before now, tricky to find in facsimile. That the book includes a CD of performances of the pieces referenced in Kelly's text testifies to the care the publishers took with this volume (with the expense the publishers went to I'm surprised the price isn't much higher).
While I wish that the book would have been longer, taking us into the 20th Century, that is probably more of a request for a multi-volume set, not for a couple of additional chapters. Those wishing for a specialist's understanding of medieval notation (or better, notations) will still need the help of other monographs, but as an introduction to how notation changed our musical world, I can't image a more wisely planned, or eloquently argued, or beautifully prepared book.

This is like reading the dictionary. They have some scheme where they get 5-star rating for sending a practice test DVD but it's not a 5-star product. Hymns For Meditation was a little bit too easy but the arrangements were still very pretty and I enjoyed playing them.

Great for Intermidiate Students!

This book is really great for Intermidiate Piano Players! I love to start my students out with these (when they begin playing offeratories.) The selections are long enough for the kids to feel accomplished, but yet short enough for an offeratory.
Another great thing is that the songs are arranged in easy keys for the little people. YAY! So refreshing! Gives us some breathing room to work on dynamics instead of always drilling the scales and junk.

Good Job to Martha Meir! You are quite popular with many intermediate pianists! These are creative, but the chording is simple, and they're so "flowy", that they sound simply elegant.

There are a few octave reaches, so beware about that all you tiny-handed people :).

Beautiful renditions...

THE MANUEL WAS A HELPFUL GUIDE, INCLUDING A TIP TO USE A DUST MASK DUE TO POSSIBLE HAZARDS OF INHALING THIS HARMFUL DUST. THIS MANUEL COVERS THE BASICS FAIRLY WELL AND THE PICTURES MATCH UP WELL WITH THE TEXT.
