Rutley's Elements of Mineralogy (Semiconductors; 1), by C.D. Gribble

Rutley's elements of mineralogy has been around for a long time, certainly throughout my own lifetime; and if my great grandfather had read geology, it would have been prescribed reading for him too! It has been rewritten and revised frequently since fir~t conceived by Frank Rutley in the late 19th century. Major revisions occurred in 1902, and then in 1914, when H. H. Read first took over the authorship, and thereafter in 1936 and in 1965 when the last major changes occurred. It was with some trepidation that I agreed to attempt this revision. I had been asked to do it by Janet Watson in 1979, but various commitments delayed my start on it until 1984. This 27th edition encompasses a number of changes. Chapters 1-5 have the same headings as before, but considerable changes have been made in all of them, particularly 1, 3, 4 and 5. Comments sought prior to the revision revealed considerable disagreement about the role of blowpipe analyses in the book. I have only once had blowpipe analyses demon strated to me, and have never used them; but there is no doubt that they are employed in many countries, and many of the tests (flame colour, bead, etc. ) are still useful as rapid indicators of which element is present in a mineral. I have therefore kept blowpipe analysis information in Rutley, but have relegated it to an appendix.

...a must for all geologists at whatever level. Previous editions have been extensively used, and this new one will be no exception. The changes and additions have improved the book and brought it right up to date both in content and style, and it is sensibly priced for today's undergraduate and highly recommended. - British Geologist

just as consuming as the first two
By Binkie van Es
The third installment in the trilogy. I enjoyed this story so much that I read all three in one consecutive session. In this last book we see how Richard who in the first book started as a simple woods guide assumes rulership of all Midlands in his position as Master of D'Hara in an effort to combat the Imperial Order. His magic is still very intuitive and not under firm control which puts him in plenty of unexpected and dangerous situations, at the same time confusing his enemies who cannot estimate his reactions to challenges. All the other main players, his grandfather and his love have big adventures of their own. All I want to say as always , not wanting to give away the story, read it. But if you read the first two I am sure you will read this one also

Kindle edition problems, version purchased Feb 7 2012
By Nobody In Particular
This review is specifically for the Kindle edition of this book, not about the story.

For the story, this is the kind of writing and story telling that some people like
and some do not. I happen to like it, sometimes. It is what it is, and I don't
have much to say about it from that point of view.

I am moved to write a review specifically because of the quality of the Kindle edition.

Simply put, this is a poorly edited version of this book. It's not unreadable by any means,
and it is far from the worst example I've seen, but there are typos on what seems like
every few pages, and it is distracting and annoying.

Clearly the person(s) responsible for producing the Kindle edition did not bother proofreading
the text. You simply cannot read more than a few pages of this without finding some obvious
mistake.

I have read the original paperback edition, a few years ago. I am not going to bother
comparing the printed text with the Kindle text, but I do not recall that original edition
being so poorly edited.

Also I will say that I just finished reading the Kindle editions of the first two volumes
of this series, and they were much more carefully produced editions.

I would like to urge the publisher to go back and do a better job on this.

For some Kindle books I have received updates from Amazon for corrections in editions of
a few other books. I would hope that would occur in this case as well because this
is a much more outstanding example of a book very obviously needing correction.

The first three of these books are pretty good. I like most of the characters
By Stiles Finstock
The first three of these books are pretty good. I like most of the characters, settings, and there are some good action pieces. That being said, there are some really annoying parts about the book, too.

For instance, the rules of magic seem to be entirely subjective. In the first book, for instance, one of the characters possesses a powerful magic that we are repeatedly told is absolute; we're told there are no loopholes with this magic, and that it is devastating to anybody who it is unleashed against. One of the major plot points centers around the rules of this magic, but by the end of the first book, two different people have been hit with this magic and not been affected. We get a huge problem for the majority of the book about the effects of this magic and the fact that it cannot be countered or avoided, but then at a the end the author says "Welp, forget it, we'll just have it not work this time!"

These books also fall into the strange habit fantasy has of getting off topic into weird sexual scenarios. By the second book in the series, we've been introduced to three completely different groups of women who force men to have sex with them. Three different groups of women who have male slaves (and all three take sexual advantage of this). One, it kind of makes sense, I guess. Two? Getting kind of weird. Three? Man, you might need a cold shower before you sit down to write.

In my opinion, the characters serve the plot too much as well. For instance, we'll see a character fight monsters for a book or two, then for seemingly no reason the character will trust one of the monsters as though he hasn't spent the last books beheading them. Characters who could easily help our protagonist are always pulled away on other errands to make sure the answers are never clear.

That being said, the books, and this book in particular, are pretty good. We get a lengthy introduction to a character that winds up being not particularly important. We get some great fights, we get some parts where Richard just wrecks shop,

Overall, these aren't bad books. They're better than a lot of fantasy out there, and are competently written.

Neither Jew nor Greek: A Contested Identity (Christianity in the Making, Volume 3), by James D. G. Dunn

The third and final installment of James Dunn's magisterial history of Christian origins through 190 C.E.,Neither Jew nor Greek: A Contested Identitycovers the period after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70C.E.through the second century, when the still-new Jesus movement firmed up its distinctive identity markers and the structures on which it would establish its growing appeal in the following decades and centuries.

Dunn examines in depth the major factors that shaped first-generation Christianity and beyond, exploring the parting of the ways between Christianity and Judaism, the Hellenization of Christianity, and responses to Gnosticism. He mines all the first- and second-century sources, including the New Testament Gospels, New Testament apocrypha, and such church fathers as Ignatius, Justin Martyr, and Irenaeus, showing how the Jesus tradition and the figures of James, Paul, Peter, and John were still esteemed influences but were also the subject of intense controversy as the early church wrestled with its evolving identity.

Comprehensively covering an important, complex era in Christianity that is often overlooked, this volume is a landmark contribution to the field.

Review
Craig S. Keener
— Asbury Theological Seminary
“Here we have on full display the distilled fruits of decades of research and engagement by a mature scholar of the first rank. James Dunn engages a vast range of secondary and primary literature in a way that only a senior scholar can do, synthesizing the best insights, critically and meticulously evaluating all sources and hypotheses, and producing a masterpiece of erudition that will be foundational for future work on the subject. While respectfully interacting with a range of scholarship, this work also forges its own noteworthy conclusions, in the process sometimes challenging conventional assumptions from across the spectrum of scholarly opinion.”

Bruce Longenecker
— Baylor University
“Calling this substantial book his ‘farewell to the large undertakings of my writing career,’ James Dunn compellingly engages developments in Christian identity from the destruction of Jerusalem in 70ce into the late second century. Neither Jew nor Greek is awe-inspiring in scope and majestic in execution. Like a peerless master taking his craft to new heights, Dunn accomplishes his task with the clarity of thought and expression that has been ahallmark of his long-standing career. This is both sweet vintage and astute valediction.”

J. R. Daniel Kirk
— Fuller Theological Seminary
“In concluding his magnum opus, James Dunn offers a powerful account of how the earliest Jesus tradition and its various renderings by Jesus’ first Jewish followers came to shape and be shaped by the movement that developed from 70 to 200ce. Students and scholars alike will find much to appreciate, argue with, and learn from.”

About the Author
James D. G. Dunn is Lightfoot Professor Emeritus of Divinity at Durham University and one of the foremost New Testament scholars in the world today. His many other books include The Oral Gospel Tradition; Jesus, Paul, and the Gospels; The Theology of Paul the Apostle; and Jesus Remembered and Beginning from Jerusalem, volumes1 and2 of Christianity in the Making.

What is there not to admire in the careful scholarship ...
By James Garacia
What is there not to admire in the careful scholarship of Professor Emeritus Dunn. He has devoted his life to untangling the threats of Christian Origins. I shall study this book -- and the other two of the trilogy -- until I die. James Garcia

Not exactly what I had imagined
By doncecca
Actually ... I don't regret having bought the book. There are always a lot of good things and useful insights in J. Dunn's writings. Nevertheless it's not exactly what I had imagined, supposing this third volume of Christianity in the Making would continue the story from where it left off at the end of the second volume. Instead almost half of the book is spent to repeat many things present in the previous books of the trilogy, and the rest does'nt look exactly as a "story". In any case...
The attempt to prove the birth of church's priesthood out of thin air in the end of the first or early second century is almost pathetic and supported by a set of contradictions difficult to find elsewhere. But of course, if the thesis of the work is summarised by Kasemann's quotation mentioned at page 816, one cannot expect anything else.
For the extent of the subject the volume is not so big, considering also it uses a font size larger than in the previous two books of the series.
Moreover ... It makes me smile the fact that the autor ignores completely! (and, of course, purposely) the magnum opus of J. P. Meier "A marginal Jew", and this, may be, because on the other side Meier had dealt almost spitefully, in p. 23 of his 4 volume, with the first Dunn's volume :) :) :)

A Basic Primer
By Joan Blitman
"The Jewish Home" meets the criteria for a basic introduction for those who want to understand guidelines and holidays for building a Jewish Home. This small volume best serves those who have a limited knowledge basis upon which to build. It is simply written, easy to read and uses a Q&A format to provide information about rituals and customs for the practise and understanding of Reform Judaism. The photos are somewhat dated but do not detract from the currency of the textual material.

Excellent Quick Resource
By A Customer
This book is like a "cliff notes" for the jewish home. It includes the appropriate prayers for hanging the mezuzah, shabbot etc... and it does a nice job of explaining the holidays and pointing out the difference b/w reform and conservative jewish observance. I have read this book over and over again and will use it for years to come. I plan to read the stories to my children before each holiday.

I fell in love; geology is now my major.
By McAtee
This books is awesome. It has everything you need to know about the basics of geology-- includes earth systems, some basic astronomy, basic oceanography, climatology, etc. and is a fantastic resource. It also helps to have a wonderful teacher, but you can get everything you need from this book if your teacher isn't fantastic. I loved this course so much, I found myself missing it after the quarter ended-- so I changed my major! Hopefully you enjoy it as well, you'll learn a lot and the writing is informative without being dry or boring.

Great Textbook
By Joe
Excellent text on Geology. Informative, easy to read, well organized. Covers a variety of introductory material very well. I believe ti can be used in conjunction with a class, or as a stand alone device. If stand alone you should probably get some of the other media that can bepurchased with it.

Applications of DSP
By JASA
As a previous reader correctly pointed out, this book (TADSP), from Rabiner & Gold (R&G), is not a DSP book for beginners. This book was written in 1975, along with the book Digital Signal Processing from Oppenheim & Schafer (O&S), while the authors of both books - Oppenheim, Schafer, Rabiner and Gold - lived in the MIT/Bell Labs ecosystem. So, the book from R&G was to be a complement to the DSP book from O&S, which is much more focused into the fundamentals of DSP and it is a rather pedagogical text (perhaps still the most effective yet, IMHO).

TADSP from O&S has some dated chapters on Hardware for DSP, finite word length effects (an important issue back then, when processors with 8-bit words were used to implement FIR filters, and such,...) which nevertheless convey important information, such as the design of hardware for implementing FFTs. Some nice chapters are about FIR and IIR Filters, Spectrum Estimation, Speech Processing, 2-Dimensional DSP, and DSP for radar applications. I use it as a reference often. My old copy is 11th printing (I bought it used a few years ago), so TADSP has been a DSP bestseller along the years. If you want to have a snapshot of (still important) applications and "industrial" techniques of DSP when DSP was exploding and starting to influence many scientific and technological areas, you cannot go wrong with TADSP.

DSP all the way .....
By Amazon Customer
I had the unfortunate experiance of having this book as my first book on DSP. It is an industrial strength DSP book intended for practising engineers. It deals with the foundations of DSP in a rather cursory manner. Rabiner rushes into filters, pratical DSP tools almost in the first few chapters.
A good book for experts a bad one for beginners...

I've spent many happy hours with Rabiner & Gold
By D. R.
A gem. A classic. I've spent many happy hours with Rabiner & Gold. It worked fine as my first serious DSP book, but for most people maybe only appropriate for the mathematically strong.

Book one in the Alien Slave Masters series

When a distant planet’s ownership is in dispute, conquering aliens turn defiant human males into pampered sex slaves.

In a not-too-distant future, a lopsided war has led to aliens invading and occupying an Earth settlement. Wid is a young colonist who has been caught harassing the aliens. He and his friends are rounded up and sent to an alien warship patrolling the disputed space. His fate is to serve as a sex slave for the ship’s imposing captain. Wid, at first, fights against his enslavement, but soon learns that not only does he stand no chance against the much larger and stronger captain, he isn’t sure he even wants to.

Like all Travian males, Kell is bound by duty to defend his people. Having risen to the rank of captain, he nevertheless chafes against the boring and endless patrol of the space invaded by the humans. His misses his family and constantly guards against his scheming first officer. He sees his reward of a human sex slave as more of a nuisance. Yet the pretty, fair-haired human’s exotic allure is hard to resist. He finds far more pleasure in the use of his pet than he would like.

Kept naked and leashed, Wid’s days are filled with boredom, while his nights wrapped in Kell’s arms turn from fear into pleasure. Even as the humans plot their escape, Wid and Kell form a bond and their growing affection cannot be ignored. When tensions boil over among the aliens, Wid and his friends may be Kell and his crew’s only chance for survival.

The Alien Slave Masters series

Desperate humans fled an overcrowded Earth and believed they had found sanctuary on New World Colony 7. The Travians see them as invaders and have become reluctant occupiers of the pesky humans after a short war. When young men taunt and harass them, the Travians find a surprising use for the miscreants—they turn them into the sexual pets of their battleship officers.

Wid, Joel and Stuart are three young men who are among the first to face their fate as slaves. Not all of the Travians are happy with their gifts and the responsibility that having them brings. But there is no way to refuse. Now humans and Travians have to forge uneasy—and, for the humans, frightening—relationships. Some Travians exploit their pets, while others pamper them and find themselves lured surprisingly into love. For their part, the humans are drawn deeper into Travian culture and politics. The Captain's Pet
By The Jeep Diva
After reading several full length romance novels in a row I was looking for something quick and dirty for my next read. The Captain’s Pet by Samantha Cayto worked perfectly with that in mind. This erotic futuristic sci fi takes readers to a faraway planet in that humans have fled to when Earth has reached its limits on sustaining life. Humans have attempted to colonize New World Colony Seven. The attempt is being halted by the Travian’s claiming that Barantho actually belongs to them. The Travian’s simply want the invaders to vacate their planet.

There are varying sides to how the humans and Travian’s end up together. The human young men were caught vandalizing one of the occupying forces buildings. They are captured by the Travian security force and thus punished. The High Command has gifted their soldiers with human pets. While the humans are used to punishment being handed down in a very different manner, the Travian’s cannot insult High Command by denying their gifts.

Kell and Wid are the main couple of this installment of the Alien Slave Masters series. Kell is captain of the Travian vessel. He has a certain image to uphold. The human pet that is Wid is initially seen as an inconvenience that is added to his many duties. Wid just wants to go home to his family. He soon sees that less brutality for him and the other pets is something they are all willing to quickly settle for. Not knowing how long the punishment will last the human captives band together to help each other in all ways possible. There is a strong them vs us camaraderie among the human captives.

Readers should note that this is not your typical erotic sci fi romance. Kell and Wid’s couplings go from rape, to dubious consent, to seduction for means to an end, to completely consentual. There is plenty of violence to go around for all. All of this takes them to a world specific quasi happy place. It all works together for this very specific world. While oftentimes it’s not pretty it all flows with the story being presented.

Great story...kept me totally engrossed!
By Sinfully
I didn't think I'd end up loving this book so much, but saying that I am a m/m Sci Fi fan...especially if it's set in deep space, on board ship, and there's an intriguingly different alien race involved. I also love slave fic so putting the two together with a provoking storyline, memorable characters (both human and alien) and some well thought out world and culture building—well, I really shouldn't be surprised at how much The Captains Pet kept me engrossed!

"This book contains sex scenes of both non-consensual and dubious consent, as well as scenes of violence, abuse and torture"

Those are the warnings given and there's no sugar coating it. Rape and abuse are uncompromisingly portrayed from the onset, but these are a race of technically advanced humanoid aliens whose culture, codes of ethics, scruples, morals, standards and ideals are so far in opposition to those of the people they're in conflict with, they just see taking these defiant, inferior beings as 'spoils of war' because of their superiority. Their prisoners are not viewed as equals, ergo they can do with them as they please without compassion, conscience or remorse; so because of that Wid and the rest of the captured boys are given (as a reward) to certain members of the crew of Kell's ship to be kept as sex slaves and pets.

More unfortunately, because of the enmity between the two races, a few of the Travian crew are even more hostile towards humans than others, and their treatment of the slaves is far more brutal and uncivilized than the rest of the crew, who still take their pleasure forcibly from their 'pets' as a matter of rote, but in a detached way, still look after the boys they've acquired. Making sure they're well fed and allowed time together daily with their fellow captives in a community room, provided for the boys on board the ship. A room that contains a pool with restorative properties to help the boys heal quicker from the rough handling they endure nightly from the huge aliens. Nothing ever condones their actions, but in an extremely twisted way, the boys have a more 'comfortable' existence than they ever lead on the ravaged planet they were taken from.

What follows isn't just a story about gratuitous hard limit sex scenes, but one that also focuses on how Wid and the rest of the boys constantly fight for survival. All the time plotting to find ways to escape their predicament and forced confinement, while learning more about the cryptic alien race who actually live in a completely different political and social system than originally thought by their adversaries.

Even though a relationship of sorts develops between Wid and Kell, the Travian Captain; because of their differing cultures and dynamics, the attachment between them never evolves into a formulaic hearts and flowers style romance. Not even when they finally go beyond the non con master/slave situation...a big part of why I loved this so much. To have gone in that direction would just have turned this into another predictable sex driven, slave/capture plot, but this also has a damned good backstory that made it an attention grabbing read that personally I couldn't put down, and in my opinion is a refreshing step up from the usual offerings.

Wid is feisty… a fighter…and the development of his and Kells 'relationship' from being totally non consensual to a tentative bond—which to me, because of Wids nature, never felt like Stockholm Syndrome—is well paced and at times surprisingly exciting. Despite Kell's initial role in the story, I reluctantly found myself slowly growing to like the alien captain and a couple of his crew members. Their unusual culture fascinating to say the least, as more information about Kell's world and its politics were fed into the story.

Did it ever excuse their treatment of Wid and the others? Absolutely not...but it gave more insight into why they acted as they did, and as insight garners more understanding, it became a vice versa situation for Kell, as the more he learned about the young prisoner, the more he also began to view Wid as something other than just a mindless sex pet who satisfied his sexual needs...the twist coming when long term, underlying unrest on the ship between Kell and his aggressively ambitious first mate and his faction, puts the boys in a position of having to make choices that, as a means of long term survival, are the last ones they expect to be acting on!

I loved how Samantha Cayto took such a harsh subject and made it readable, without ever feeling too squirmy. Her writing style is very easy and I've found everything I've read by her a very enjoyable reading experience, but this one in particular did feel like a more stand out read and is definitely my favourite up to now. I know the subject matter won't be for everyone; rape is a hard trigger. However, if like me you're a reader with no particular boundaries, I think you'll really enjoy this darkly compelling Sci Fi tale too. I was fully engaged by this novella, and knowing there are two more to come about sweet, gentle Stuart, and Wid's straight, fiery co conspirator, Joel, and their Travian masters, can't wait to get stuck into their stories!

Really good Cap/Slave NonCon that doesn't go too dark but manages to bundle the right elements together!
By AlexJouJou
Finally - a capture/slave that is not mushy sweet with insta-love on the part of the captured. I most enjoyed here the very fallible characters. They each had misconceptions that did not magically disappear but instead shifted over time due to experience (the way most of us change!). Kell and Wid were completely engaging as a couple but, though there were romantic elements at times, this is not a romance. It's more a story of acceptance and understanding what you want, where you are, and the choices you make given those circumstances with how you want to live your life. There is rape but it's not terribly explicit and it is appropriate to the story. This is a gradient story - where things exist on a spectrum that shifts rather then black and white. It actually is very much how I would imaging things might go. Misunderstandings but an openness to change ideas rather than stay dogmatically with one thought - even if things cannot always materialize in the real world. There was give and take but also elements of fait accompli and not being able to change things even if you want them to change. The ending relationship does not end neatly with a duo - and that's appropriate because this feels more like real world. Odd that. To think a SciFi resembles more closely real world then other current day fiction stories. There you have it.

4 Stars because I wanted a bit more grit. I think there was a wee bit too much under the surface here. The emotional impact, for example, of us being able to hear or see what happened to Stuart or Wid towards the end (no spoiler) would have packed a far greater punch then just knowing. Though I really liked both characters there was still some distance for me - that gap could have been closed with the willingness to dive deeper into the (frankly) bad stuff. It might also have been drawn out with a beginning preface or opening chapter or flashback that provided more understanding of the home worlds for both MC's and a little more context there. These would be rec's for me for future stories - this is nearly there and I am eagerly looking forward to #2!

Playing Days: A Novel, by Benjamin Markovits

In print for the first time in the United States, acclaimed novelist Benjamin Markovits’s Playing Days is a mostly autobiographical narrative concerning the author’s season playing minor league professional basketball in Germany and the love affair with another player’s estranged wife that ushers him into adulthood.

Growing up in Texas, Ben experienced basketball as a mostly solitary pursuit, one he gave up after riding the bench in high school. But as his college classmates prepare for the real world, Ben is seized by an idea. All he needs is a video camera, an empty court, and his mother’s German citizenship.

Improbably, he lands a roster spot on a lower division pro team in Landshut, forty-five minutes outside of Munich. It’s Ben’s first taste of competition in years, not to mention his first job. And like most jobs, it’s defined by repetition, boredom, and gossip. There’s Charlie, the trash-talking mercenary from Chicago; the coach, Herr Henkel, a recently retired player anxious to justify his paycheck; and Karl (based on the author’s real life relationship with Dirk Nowitski), a gangly teenage prodigy flashing the raw talent that will make him an NBA star. As a group of men learn how to navigate one another, Ben falls in love with the young mother of a teammate’s child, and begins an affair that will change his life.

Wry, poignant, and tenderly observed, Playing Days is an evocative meditation on the joys of youth, the triumphs and terrors of post-college life, and one of the best books ever written about what basketball can mean to an American man.

Review
“[A] frank, disarming autobiographical novel…In scenes that are striking both for their insight and for the chasteness of their characters’ behavior, Markovits effectively portrays Benjamin’s stumbling entry into the adult world…the affecting story of a young man starting to find his way in the world through basketball.” (Shelf Awareness)

“Excellent.” (The Times (London))

“Markovits is an exceptionally adept chronicler of human interaction… in this elegant, thoughtful novel.” (New Statesman)

“Markovits draws himself with exceptional delicacy…This is the territory of the rites-of-passage novel, but it is territory that the author navigates with subtlety and poignancy.” (The Guardian)

“PLAYING DAYS delivers a sharply honest account of the mostly selfish impulses of a young man…astutely rendering the restlessness of that ill-fitting period between schooling and manhood, in which mettle needs to be found before it can be tested.” (The Independent)

“PLAYING DAYS…succeeds in combining an emotionally honest coming-of-age narrative with a convincing evocation of the artificial, cynical, yet curiously idealistic, world of preofessional sport.” (The Times Literary Supplement)

“Playing Days is a humble and sensitive portrayal of a young adult trying to find his feet on the basketball court and in the world…The subtlety of Playing Days is that though the subjects for interpretation are teased out, the ultimate meaning is left poised for our own consideration.” (The Financial Times)

“Markovits’s plot is as smoothly nonchalant as a sea breeze in summer, yet the reader is enticed by his subtle yet powerful characterization and a wonderfully lucid writing style…His story becomes almost unbearably appealing as it ratches up towards a magnificently suspenseful and apt conclusion.” (The Sunday Business Post)

“This unusual autobiographical episode is lit up by Markovits’ eye for psychological and social detail…Both matter of fact and acutely observant, it wears its wisdom with a shrug.” (The Independent)

An excellent and enjoyable novel
By Bookreporter
While reading PLAYING DAYS by Benjamin Markovits, I mentally compared this basketball-themed title to other favorite sports novels. There aren’t that many. I thought of THE NATURAL by Bernard Malamud, BANG THE DRUM SLOWLY by Mark Harris, THE ART OF FIELDING by Chad Harbach and NORTH DALLAS FORTY by Peter Gent. Why is sports such a barren topic for fiction writers? Perhaps real-life sports, with countless examples of extraordinary achievements and overcoming great odds, make the fictional counterpart tricky to capture on the pages of a novel. It also might be that sportswriters spend their time writing about actual events and find it difficult to transition to fiction. Whatever the reason, sports-themed novels are rare, and notable ones are even more uncommon.

While one might argue that PLAYING DAYS is more biography than fiction, it is indeed a novel and makes for an excellent and enjoyable reading experience. In college, Markovits played basketball. After graduation, he made an audition video of his basketball skills and sent it to various European basketball teams. On the basis of that footage, Markovits signed to play with a German second-division team. Europeans are passionate about basketball, and there are a multitude of teams in European cities both large and small. While we cannot be certain how much of the book is based on his true-life experience, he did play a season in Europe, and the main character here bears his name and life history.

PLAYING DAYS revolves around the players on the provincial Landshut team, a mix of American and European athletes, with most of the stereotypes one would expect to find occupying the team’s roster. Some are just beginning their basketball careers and dream of being discovered by the NBA or a major European club. Others are on a downward spiral and hope to hang on for one more season. One character in the novel is clearly a young Dirk Nowitzki, now an NBA Hall of Famer, who played on the DJK Wrzburg team and was picked in the first round of the 1998 NBA draft.

The novel’s two main characters are Ben and Bo Hadnot, one of the players on the team whose career has seen better days. Ultimately Bo will leave the Landshut team but reappears for a final one-on-one battle with Ben in the division championship game. He also leaves behind his wife, Anke, and young child. Ben begins an affair with the woman, and their relationship forms a backdrop for much of Markovits’ introspective narratives.

PLAYING DAYS captures the “empty time,” the hours and days when players are not preparing for games or practicing. During these moments, the players and management of the Landshut team share their lives and feelings of disconnection and indirection. When Markovits shifts to describing actual games, his knowledge of basketball is clear. Author John McPhee described basketball as “a game of subtle felonies”; the novel makes that point in its on-court action.

It requires a certain skill to write sports fiction and a certain reading interest to pick up a sports-themed novel. If basketball is your thing, then PLAYING DAYS is the book for you.

I enjoyed it
By Gualtiero Forte
Solid read from Benjamin Markovits. I picked up a free version from my work's library and got hooked after reading the first few chapters. An interesting look at the life of a semi-professional basketball player in Germany and overall a relatable story of that second coming of age that stems from moving overseas. Reminds me in some ways of 'Playing for Pizza' by John Grisham.
