About the Author
James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.

Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.

Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.

The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.

James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

Excellent technic exercises for the older level 3 piano student ...

Excellent technic exercises for the older level 3 piano student (ages 10+). This method focuses heavily on chord development- including inversions. Exercises are fun, upbeat, and never tedious. They are repetitive enough to get the concept mastered, with adequate practice time. I recommend this for my students who are interested in playing jazz, hymns, pop accompaniment music, and movie themes. The technics in this curriculum do not focus heavily on classical- so you will need to supplement appropriately. Students will also need to be able to reach an octave.

The best bio I've ever read - a must read.

It is perhaps the best written biography I have ever read. Sylvie brings many of those who she uses for her information into the biography by interviewing them and getting their direct input, not her interpretation. It is detail, it is without bias, it is compelling to read and answers so many questions I had about Leonard's life, even though I had been familiar with him since 1971. It also dispels so many of the erroneous comments present to the world by the media. It is a highly recommended book for anyone who appreciates The Man, Leonard Cohen....

This book as well as Mr. Cohen's earthly time have ended. I don't usually read biographies, especially ones that read like "hagiography." This one--at the subject's request--did not. The biographer covered her subject in intimate and thorough detail. Reading it felt like living his life with him--from birth to late life with every woman, every drug, every writer's experience and life event in between. So many memories I share with someone I only knew through his words and music, yet intersect and parallel as members of roughly the same generation. All the names and places I recall from my own youth. Some may feel the author repeats information yet to me these parts felt as if I were remembering, reminiscing Leonard's memories along with him. Did I want the mysterious songs explained? Probably not, but they are still beautiful and calming, serene as a meditative moment. And it was worth it to get inside the workings of a mind of a great poet. So long, Leonard Cohen. There will never be another artist like you.

Very Informative

While I have always enjoyed the music of Leonard Cohen I must admit I knew very little about him. Now that has changed. I never knew that he had been a Scientologist, a Buddhist Monk along with his Jewish heritage. Leonard has lived a very interesting life along with being swindled out of his life savings and then going on the road touring again at over 70 years of age. While I have always had respect for him it has now increased very much.

I strongly recommend this book if you have an interest in Leonard Cohen. I think you will be very impressed after the read.

Great Book on Orthognathics and Dentofacial Deformity

I bought this book about 6 months ago, and have thoroughly enjoyed reading it. This book is the most current and comprehensive textbook on dentofacial deformity and orthognathic surgery. It goes beyond the basics of orthognathics, which other general oral surgery textbooks provide. In the past before getting this book, I had to skip around between specific chapters of several different textbooks and articles to get the information I needed. Now it's all in one place.

This comprehensive textbook covers multiple topics, from basic principles and two jaw surgery, to chin/ear/nose/and neck augmentation. The textbook also presents the classic patterns of dentofacial deformity, cleft-orthognathics, and grafting technique; all in a well organized and easy to understand manner.

This textbook has special emphasis on the surgical aspect of dentofacial deformity; as it should, since it's a surgical textbook. In other textbooks, you would be lucky to see only a handful examples of pre/post surgery. In this book, nearly every chapter has multiple detailed photos of patient's pre and post op, with explanations of why and what was done. The author also has step-by-step instructions of surgery, with plenty of illustrations. There are also 45 surgical videos! You can watch this world renowned, duel board certified Plastic and OMFS surgeon actually performing the surgeries he talks about in the book.

This book was a great and invaluable addition to my own personal library.

Bigger but not better.

I used the earlier editions while studying in medical school and for reference since. This new edition, while more voluminous, is unwieldy and confusing. The cute little icons that used to be so helpful are now just unclear, superfluous and often just silly. This is a good example of a publisher working too hard to make a text better, and ruining a good thing in the process. A real disappointment...

Used all of year two, great tool.

If you feel you need a book for year two of medical school pharmacology, this gets my recommendation. The format and layout lined up almost perfectly with my course work. Very easy to follow. (Ex they have most chapters broken up into drug groups like "anti-anginals" "antivirals" or "pharmacokinetics") Too in depth to solely be used for boards studying though.

About the Author

Professor Dr. Jyoti Prakash Tamang is one of the authorities of global fermented foods and beverages for last 28 years. He did Ph.D. in Microbiology from North Bengal University, India in 1992, Post-doc research works from National Food Research Institute, Tsukuba, Japan in 1995, and Institute of Hygiene and Toxicology, Germany in 2002. He is a Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (2012), Fellow of Indian Academy of Microbiological Sciences (2010), and Fellow of Biotech Research Society of India (2006). He has published more than 135 research papers, and authored several books including (1) Himalayan Fermented Foods: Microbiology, Nutrition, and Ethnic Values (2010), (2) Fermented Foods and Beverages of the World (2011) and (3) Health Benefits of Fermented Foods and Beverages< (2015) all published by CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group, USA. He has one patent, and has produced several Ph.D. students. He is a member of several prestigious national and international academics including International Yeast Commission, Asian Federation of Lactic Acid Bacteria, etc. Prof. Tamang is a senior Professor in Department of Microbiology and also Dean of School of Life Sciences of Sikkim University, a national university at Gangtok, India.�
