About the Author
Born in Cambridge, England in 1973, Mr Windsor has studied many forms of European fencing. He has also studied Akido, T'ai Chi Chuan, and Okinawan Kobudo. Together with Paul MacDonald he is a founder of the Dawn Duellists Society and is the founder and director of the Helsinki School of European Swordsmanship.

An author of strong, but well-justified, opinions, and great knowledge of his subject

Right smack in the introduction Mr. Windsor justifies every further second of time you will spend reading and learning from the rest of this book. He discusses the three types of swordsman, the competitior, the technician, and the spiritualist. He's taught long enough to know how these types of students progress. That knowledge alone is worth the price of admission.

Mr. Windsor has published a second edition of this book as well. Choose either one. You're in good hands.

Excellent Companion Material for New or Experienced Longsword Practitioners

This book is a great reference that I find best paired with Guy Windsor's "Mastering the Arts of Arms Volume 2 - The Medieval Longsword". Where the aforementioned book goes into technical detail and presents technique and guides for learning the technical aspects of longsword, this book goes into the philosophy of training and how to train with different types of fencers. It also has some technical detail and more drills/technique, however this book really nicely breaks down some of the more metaphysical or mental aspects of learning and fighting with a Longsword. Highly recommend this book, especially paired with Guy Windsor's Longsword book. As with his book on longsword, I recommend this book to anyone who is just starting or anyone that has been practicing for a while or even instructing. Whether learning on your own or already a member of a club or learning community, this book contains invaluable information that goes a long way to improving your understanding and mastery of the longsword material.

A constant companion for fasting & prayer

Each day, the author encourages you and affirms your devotion to the fast and prayer. You are reminded of who God is, what He does, who you are and your kingdom inheritance. You are given a call-to-action and declaration to help you achieve spiritual growth & maturity. I highly recommend this book as an everyday read to nurture your spirit. It should be a constant companion, along with the bible, during the 21 days of prayer and fasting.

This book was amazing

I have done this 21 day fast before but this time it was at another level and i believe it is because of the guidance of this book. It is practical and it goes to the very deep depths of your relationship with God! An easy read yet fully packed. One will not go wrong with this one.

love love love!

This was my first Daniel Pink book (I also own "Drive," but haven't read it yet), and I was extremely impressed/satisfied with it.

Awesome sales book. I especially liked how he spent the first third of the book talking about how pretty much everyone in the world today is in some form of selling. You might not see yourself as a "traditional salesman," but whatever you're line of work is, your survival/success will depend on how well you can "move people" (i.e. get them to part with their resources, such as time/money/energy, in exchange for some value you can provide to them).

I'm following this book up with "Instant Influence" by Pantalon, which Pink references and recommends as additional reading in this book.

Disclosure: I've read most of the classic books like Influence by Cialdini, How I Raised Myself from Failure to Success in Selling by Bettger, Pitch Anything by Oren Klaff, etc. and still found this one to be extremely helpful.

The measure of any book is the value you can get out of it - i.e. what can you apply to your life/goal from the author's work/recommendations. I definitely found quite a few ideas that I could apply to a venture I'll be undertaking in the very near future (fundraising for a new hedge fund).

Great book for Pastors & Communicators

Let me be honest, I love the work of Daniel Pink. This book is not exception.

Pink starts out by telling us how his book is for more than just salesman. The reality though, is that everyone is in sales. You may not make cold calls or get people to buy things, but you are seeking to motivate people everyday. Whether that is a boss, a child, a spouse or a friend.

For leaders, this concept is enormous, but it is even more important for pastors. Every week, when a pastor preaches, they are seeking to move people. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, they seek to help people move from where they are to their next step with God. This takes motivation. According to Pink, this takes sales. While pastors will bristle at this idea, it is also true. Call it motivation or sales, it is the same thing. According to Pink, "The average person spends 40% of their life trying to move others. We're persuading, convincing, and influencing others to give up something they've got in exchange for what we've got."

One of the problems Pink points out that we have when it comes to communicating is that we don't help people identify the correct problem. This is huge for preaching, helping people see what they could fix. Pastors often answer questions people aren't asking, and therefore don't move the people they are preaching to.

Another takeaway for me as a preacher is helping people to see what a truth could look like in their life 5 years from now. I've started to say in sermons, "Imagine what your life would be like if you believed ____________." People are often unmoved, not because they don't understand something, but because they can't see the benefit or goodness of something.

Here are a few things that jumped out:

-One of the most effective ways of moving others is to uncover challenges they may not know they have.
-To sell well is to convince someone else to part with resources--not to deprive that person, but to leave him better off in the end.
-The correlation between extraversion and sales was essentially nonexistent.
-You have to believe in the product you're selling--and that has to show.
-Once positive emotions outnumbered negative emotions by 3 to 1--that is, for every three instances of feeling gratitude, interest, or contentment, they experienced only one instance of anger, guilt, or embarrassment--people generally flourished.
-Next time you're getting ready to persuade others, reconsider how you prepare. Instead of pumping yourself up with declarations and affirmations, take a page from Bob the Builder and pose a question instead. Ask yourself: "Can I move these people?" As social scientists have discovered, interrogative self-talk is often more valuable than the declarative kind. But don't simply leave the question hanging in the air like a lost balloon. Answer it--directly and in writing. List five specific reasons why the answer to your question is yes.
-The problem we have saving for retirement, these studies showed, isn't only our meager ability to weigh present rewards against future ones. It is also the connection--or rather, the disconnection--between our present and future selves.
-The third quality necessary in moving others today: clarity--the capacity to help others see their situations in fresh and more revealing ways and to identify problems they didn't realize they had.
-We often understand something better when we see it in comparison with something else than when we see it in isolation.
-So if you're selling a car, go easy on emphasizing the rich Corinthian leather on the seats. Instead, point out what the car will allow the buyer to do--see new places, visit old friends, and add to a book of memories.
-Clarity on how to think without clarity on how to act can leave people unmoved.
-The purpose of a pitch isn't necessarily to move others immediately to adopt your idea. The purpose is to offer something so compelling that it begins a conversation, brings the other person in as a participant, and eventually arrives at an outcome that appeals to both of you.
-Questions can outperform statements in persuading others.

Overall, a worthwhile book for leaders or preachers.

We're all salespeople now!

There are many volumes written about sales. There are myriad training courses on sales and how to be efficient, effective and top of the heap at the game of sales. This book is not like any of the ones I have read prior to this nor is Pink espousing any of the usual hype about overcoming objections, how to close and/or how to manipulate folks into buying your product or services.
Instead, Pink is proposing something that I have been struggling with for the past five years and suggesting to anyone who would listen: traditional sales isn't any longer anyone's job. It's everyone's job because sales has fundamentally changed. Pink states that "Most of what we think we understand about selling is constructed atop a foundation of assumptions that has crumbled." He further states that sales has changed more in the past 10 years than it had in the previous 100 years.

Pink replaces the old standard ABC rule in sales; "Always Be Closing" with a new ABCs-- Attunement, Buoyancy, and Clarity. He proceeds to explain what he means by each in the following chapters of the book. Briefly, attunement is bringing oneself into harmony with individuals, groups and contexts. Buoyancy is the quality that combines grittiness of spirit and the sunniness of outlook. It's what allows salespeople to overcome the "ocean of rejection" they face every day and still function. Clarity is the capacity to make sense of complex situations, that gray area we all try to avoid. Salespeople become problem finders rather than problem solvers.

To Sell is Human is broken into three parts: Part 1 is Rebirth of a Salesman, Part 2 is How to Be and Part 3 is What to Do. He develops a new category he introduces as "non-sales selling" where we (all of us not in the traditional sales position) are "persuading, convincing, and influencing others to give up something they've got in exchange for what we've got." i One of the more important changes that Pink underscores is that the salesperson is no longer needed as a curator of information. Sellers are able, if they so choose, to be as well informed about the products and services as the salesperson. He coins the phrase caveat venditor - seller beware.

At the end of each chapter in parts 2 and 3 are dozens of techniques assembled from fresh research and best practices around the world. Pink maintains that the ability to move others to exchange what they have for what we have is a crucial ability that is required for our survival and wellbeing. The capacity to "sell" isn't some unnatural adaptation to the merciless world of commerce. It is a part of who we are.

On a personal note, I found this book to be both refreshing and humorous. Refreshing because Pink gave me a way to think about and express what I have been seeing and talking about for a long time now. Specifically that sell is a four-letter-word. More and more people are turned off by traditional sales (even the so-called "consultative selling" is now seen as manipulative.) And I found the book humorous because I found that I was laughing at myself. Pink introduces us to Norman Hall. Hall is shadowed as he goes through his usual (and traditional in many ways) sales job in San Francisco. Hall is the very last Fuller Brush Salesman. Why that made me laugh is because I am old enough that I brush my hair almost every morning with a Fuller Brush that my mother gave to me one Christmas when I was a young teenager. I have been using it ever since. I remember the Fuller Brush man (and yes, they were all men as far as I know) ringing our doorbell and brining new products into the house for my parents to purchase. By the way, what product do you still use that was purchased more than 50 years ago?

Since I spent many years as a professional salesperson, the passing of the traditional sales model is, for me, more disturbing than the passing of our usual business models or the accelerating obsolescence of products. There is no going back though, and those who work in the sales function would do well to read Pink's view on how things have changed. For those of us not in a direct sales function would do well to understand that fundamentally we are all selling in one way or another. Indeed, to sell is human.

This is indeed the "Bible" for the clinical child psychologist. As a pediatrician, who through all my professional life have worked closely with child psychologists, permit me to review this very serious and professional handbook. It is edited by C Eugene Walker from Oklahoma and Michael C Roberts from Kansas with 114 contributors (all from United States). The first edition of the handbook was published 18 years ago and it has since turned into a reference and guide for students, adademics and clinicians in the field. The book is divided into seven sections with a total of 55 chapters. The first section deals with child development and the first chapter with families and children in history with a focus on American history, but I especially liked the chapter by Judith A Chafel and Kathryn Gold Hadley on poverty and well-being of children and their families. This is a new addition to this edition, but a very important one. Poverty and hunger are old phenomena, but only recently become a subject of research and interest to politicians. They should be interested, because poverty is a major public health problem in many developed countries. Data from 1996 in the United States estimate that 20.5% of the children were living in poverty. This well researched paper will give you information on definition of poverty, effects on development, health and psychosocial risks, resiliency and implications for clinical intervention. Section two provides different diagnostic assessments of children and adolescents, section three deals with problems of early life and clinical problems of birth, neonatology, infant and preschool period and section four about problems of childhood. This last section has 16 chapters with some interesting entries. I especially liked the chapter on mental retardation, which takes into account the 1992 American Association on Mental Retardation (AMMR) definition of mental retardation, where not only IQ, but multidimential classification was used as a novel way to look upon mental retardation. I would have liked an entry on the use of the word "mental retardation", which is very much debated (sometimes very hotly like at the last international conference in Seattle in August 2000) and at all not in use in many parts of the world, where instead the term "intellectual disability" is preferred. Section five has nine relevant chapters on adolescence, but I would like to see a chapter on teenage pregnancy in the next edition, because that is especially a problem in United States and United Kingdom, where we are talking about potential psychological risks for the next generation also. Section six conveys intervention strategies with good chapters on hospitalization and pharmacotherapy among others. The last section has special topics like cultural issues, divorce, grief, ethics and forensic evaluation. The chapter on impact of a parent chronic illness is very interesting and I would also suggest a chapter on chronic illness or disability in the child for the next edition. This topic is mentioned in another chapter (on contemporary issues), but deserves a full chapter. The words disability and intellectual disability are not mentioned even in the index. In this section I especially like the chapter on child maltreatment by Barbara L Bonner and collegues, which is a good review of the field of child abuse and neglect, but again the focus in on the United States and international work in the field not mentioned. A chapter on research in child psychology and the use of internet should be added for the next edition. The effects of the internet on children and adolescents should also be added. We recently had a case here in Israel, where an internet connection between two adolescents (a Jewish male and Arab female) were used by terrorists to capture and murder the 14 year old boy. I would have liked to see a section eight with chapters on the future of infancy, childhood and adolescence both in the United States, but also a chapter on international work and research in the field of child psychology. All in all a very positive review for a very useful handbook that can be used by both psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and physicians and thanks for a good editing job. It was a pleasure to read and use this handbook.

Is it worth it?

The strength of the book is that it summarizes the main issues on assessment and treatment quite well. Certainly worthwhile for a quick reference to current opinion on topics but if you're after the finer detail of theory this may not be your book and you might want to try "Child Psychopathology" by Mash & Barkley. The question to ask is, is this book worth $170USD new? If you don't mind spending this money then the book is a useful addition to a professional library for advanced students and professionals.

Highly recommended for pediatric clinical workers.

I am writing about the 3rd edition, which is the most current volume. The only disappointment that I have about this text is that I did not obtain it much earlier. The chapters are well written with many references for further study. The practitioner can keep abreast of the current literature on topics that s/he may already be familiar, or obtain authoritive information about other clinical areas not part of one's regular practice. This text is not written in the style of a dictionary, that is, the reader is given a summary in the style and length of a journal article. The book compliments the older volumes of the American Handbook of Psychiatry for which I have still found much use.
I also give strong recommendation for the Social Worker's Desk Reference that is available on Amazon. This latter book is a 2002 text that for some disorders gives a better summary than the Handbook. The Desk Reference is of value regardless of one's clinical license.

100 pages of information stretched into a 550 page book

"An Introduction to Modern Vehicle Design" is typical of what is wrong with technical writing and text books today. The writers spend so much time constructing elegant sentences, perfecting grammar and using large words that they neglect the content. More emphasis is placed on the size of the book than the quality of the information inside. The book is a relatively easy read that touches on almost every part of the design process though it touches very lightly. I don't believe that anyone but the freshest newcomer with no knowledge of cars will learn much from this book. If I didn't already have a shelf full of excellent references waiting for my attention I would not have felt so bad about wasting my time with this text but hindsight being 20/20 I would have passed on this book. Hucho and Milliken provide better overviews of automotive engineering though neither professes to be as all encompassing as Happian-Smith attempted. A+ for effort but needs improvement.

Highly Practical and Informative

As a clinician who works extensively with couples, I found this book to be highly informative and practical. I have a number of clients who are in the "should I stay or should I go" deliberation process, and I have recommended to book to many of them. The insights and the exercises presented in Susan Gadeau's writings are helpful in that they encourage people to look deeper into themselves and their relationships, weighing the pros and cons of either remaining in the relationship, or moving on. This book was very informative and objective. I wish I had known about it years ago. Just know that there are a lot of excerises included in the book that were nearly impossible to complete in the Kindle version. If you get this book, get the print version!

It has a break down of all the steps needed to make the decision and guides the reader with how to approach every step. This book is very well written and the real stories cover a wide range of marital situations. Personally, I can't wait for Ms. Pease Gadoua's next book!!

The things you have to do to survive

I have lived in Thailand and married here, I have seen a lot so I understand when things go wrong, It can diminish your self esteem and pride to a point most westerners can't or won't understand.

This is a very insightful story when you read it you need to put yourself in his shoes VERY HARD TO DO, sitting on your sofa.

The book is great not what you would expect and worth the read, it would hit home more dramatically if there was a movie on it.

Thumbs up for Steve even making it though and not dying, and finding the man that helped him and getting the book published, I hope it turns his life around to a + and he can have a good life.

Worth the read ++ and don't look down on him until you walked a mile in his shoes, most of us would never have made it.

I know I sure would have not.

Quick read, but very entertaining

4-4 1/2 stars. I thought this was a little different from other books I read from this author--especially this series. I thought it had a "lighter" feel to it--more of an actual romance than the violence and suspense I notice from these books. I really liked the characters--I felt the were very well done and relatable. There was a bit of action, and a couple sex scenes that were just enough. Mostly, I got a feel for the struggling female alpha trying to keep her young pack together, and a totally alpha male who steps into a role no one--even him--expected. Secondary characters were just as entertaining, but didn't take away from main couple. It was a rather short story, and I read it quickly, but I really felt it packed a lot in.

I absolutely cannot say enough about this amazing book and the ones to come, because, it's extremely important and totally rare for a book to leave such an indelible mark on the person who has the pleasure and privilege to be able to read something that is not the norm in this genre of wolfpacks and I know what a great book looks like, because I have read more than 40,000 books in my lifetime and I am only 45 years old and I will probably have read more than 100,000 books by the end of my life and I know when a book will be successful and I know that this particular book and series is going to be one of the best series out there for people like me who loves to read this type of books on the supernatural and I would be remiss if I didn't recommend this book and series to one and all, because I am recommending that everyone who likes to read about the supernatural, should go out and purchase this book and series right now!! This author"s style of writing allows her to weave her story while developing her characters. If her name is on the book, most likely I have her that book. I hope you continue the series. Sometimes it's nice to see an "epilogue-type" and possible supporting characters path taken (i.e. Jase, the two girls, et al). Thank you!

Great read!

If you want to spend more time with the Lord, but are distracted and push it off, I highly recommend reading Putting God First. It is full of suggestions on how to make sure your Savior is front and center in your life, decisions, and earthly relationships.

Brittany reminds us that the answers are in making sure that God is the center of our lives. When He is not at the center, we often get lost and focus on our earthly ambitions. The answer is not "more ME time". The answer is more time in HIM. She helps guide you through making God the top priority in your life.

Encouraging, practical and easy-to-read.
