About the Author
Barbara D. Miller is Professor of Anthropology and International Affairs in the Elliott School of International Affairs of the George Washington University in Washington, DC. She is Director of the Elliott School’s Institute for Global and International Studies as well as Director of two of its affiliated research groups, the Culture in Global Affairs Program and the Global Gender Program. Before coming to GW in 1994, she taught at Syracuse University, the University of Rochester, SUNY Cortland, Ithaca College, Cornell University, and the University of Pittsburgh. For over 30 years, Barbara’s research has focused on gender-based inequalities in India, especially the nutritional and medical neglect of daughters in northern regions of the country, and sex-selective abortion. She has also conducted research on culture and rural development in Bangladesh, on low-income household dynamics in Jamaica, and on Hindu adolescents in Pittsburgh. Her current interests include continued research on gender inequalities in health in South Asia and the role of cultural anthropology in informing policy, especially as related to women, children, and other disadvantaged groups. She teaches courses on introductory cultural anthropology, medical anthropology, development anthropology, culture and population, health and development in South Asia, migration and mental health, and global gender policy.

Barbara has published many journal articles and book chapters and several books including The Endangered Sex: Neglect of Female Children in Rural North India, Second Edition (Oxford University Press 1997), an edited volume, Sex and Gender Hierarchies (Cambridge University Press 1993), and a co-edited volume with Alf Hiltebeitel, Hair: Its Power and Meaning in Asian Cultures (SUNY Press 1998). In addition to Cultural Anthropology, Eighth Edition, she is the author of Cultural Anthropology in a Globalizing World, Third Edition (Pearson 2012) and the lead author of a four-field textbook entitled Anthropology, Second Edition (Pearson 2008).

She launched a blog in 2009 called anthropologyworks where she and other contributors present informed opinion pieces about important social issues, a weekly feature covering anthropology in the mainstream media, and other features. Since its beginning, the blog has had 120,000 visits from people in nearly every country of the world. You can follow her, along with over 5,000 other people worldwide, via Twitter @anthroworks and Facebook. In 2010, she launched a second blog called globalgendercurrent, which highlights new research and debates about global women’s issues as informed by grounded research and cutting-edge policy questions. good mainstream comprehensive treatment

I got this book a few years ago, used, from here. In a few weeks I will be taking an online Cultural Anthropology class which does not use this text; but since I had acquired this text due to already owning its VangoNotes, I am trying to do a little self-learning. This also includes review as I took an Into class 30 years ago in this subject.

The prime author is a faculty at GWU and has a few other texts currently. As experience with the theoretical construct of the "science" is what I am trying to acquire, the fact this is a 2004 edition and the audio came out in 2007 does not seem to be too important in 2012. However, with genetics, my main studying background, I think it would, and would if I was focusing on genetic anthropology.

Good text.

As a student, I really found this textbook interesting and an easy read. Probably not a book I would have read outside of class, but now that I have an academic interest, I'd recommend it to anyone who wanted to learn about culture.

On the whole this book is valuable to teachers and writers of creative nonfiction. I have used it for a class in memoir.

Several problems in chapter 13, "The Basics of Good Writing in Any Form," should be brought to the attention of buyers. Sentences that begin the section headed "The Rhythm of Your Sentences" are not all simple sentences as the authors proclaim. In fact, half are complex sentences. Later, what is the imperative is identified as the vocative or command voice. The vocative is a case, not a voice. It has nothing to do with command. Still later a prepositional phrase ("into this world") is identified as a clause that modifies a noun where it clearly modifies the verb, fall. In short, the points the authors seek to make about writing are incorrectly explained and identified.

These elementary errors are significant in a book that may be considered for a textbook for a college class. Not every writer needs to know grammar cold, but every author needs an editor to find grammatical problems and correct them. Someone left a job undone here. My students learned by negative example.

And where the sample essay entitled "A Braided Heart" is excellent and a superb example useful to a teacher or a writer, "The Hazing of Swans" cries for focus and editing. It is clear to observant students and teacher that two authors wrote this book, working as individuals and not as a team.

This Isn't as Wonderful as Some Say It Is

I am not as impressed with this book as other are. I think some elements are helpful, especially the parts about how memoir is not always truth telling as in factual information. But I suspect that people would gain just as much reading the short introduction to Richard Blanco's new memoir and then to read the book which is brilliant (and funny) as anything in this book. I think many of the exercises suggested are trite. I am a retired English teacher (high school and college level) who values writing as a product. And many of those exercises are trite.

A Happy Slant

Brenda Miller and Suzanne Paola have made a good thing even better! This second edition of Tell It Slant (a nod to Emily Dickinson)is updated just enough to make it ready for use for 2012 and beyond without losing the charm and power of the first edition. This text would work in a Creative Writing course OR a Freshman Composition course. In fact, I might propose a new course at our college and use this text for it: Creative Non-Fiction 101! I highly recommend this book for inspiring your own writing, and/or that of your students.

A great illustrator, and a pretty decent writer

Often we are discouraged from finding out too much about our heroes and icons, lest we be disappointed with what we find. Rockwell, however, shines as one who is thoroughly interesting, although different from what one might imagine in his memoir/autobiography.

I suppose one might expect the celebrated illustrator (he was careful to always distinguish himself as an illustrator and not an artist) to something above the fray, laughing at the foibles of the human condition. Here we find that Rockwell was just as neurotic, and full of fancy as any of his subjects. His life, however, wasn't always a Rockwell painting. After a very unsuccessful first marriage, Rockwell found love in the arms of his second wife.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the book is when Rockwell takes us through a Saturday Evening Post cover from concept to painting. You couldn't imagine all the second guessing Rockwell did, even after the painting was done.

If you're more than just a casual Rockwell fan, you must read this. You may be stripped of a few illusions, but you will definitely appreciate the personality behind the brush.

Norman Rockwell Rocks!

Following that somewhat irreverent title, I want to say I have nothing but respect for this man. He is truly an American icon. I had a paperback version of his life way back in the '70s and found it delightful (as the man, himself, must have been). Fast forward to 2009 and a trip to the Detroit Institute of Art where a huge body of his work was on display for several months. As I toured the exhibit, I recalled the honest and endearing words from that long ago paperback and realized that I wanted to read them again. "Adventures of a Illustrator" arrived and I was amazed. I now have a beautiful book on my coffee table that is filled, not only with his life story, told with humor and humility, but a generous number of illustrations; early and late, color and black and white. including all of his POST covers. Anyone who has admired this man's work over the years, from his story-filled Saturday Evening Post covers to his sensitive Freedom posters and presidential portraits, will enjoy learning the life story behind this gentle man's work.

My Adventures As an Illustrator Review

This is a wonderful book about the life of Norman Rockwell as only he could have written. I enjoyed the book from start to finish and I have recommended it to all my friends. It gives you an understanding of his life and his discriptions of all the characters in his life are really fun. I have never read a book with such fun descriptions. He went through a lot of phases in his life and moved whenever he found he was lacking of ideas. If you like Norman Rockwell paintings, this book will help you enjoy the painting even more. What can I say - This book is really fun!!

Positioning theory, dialogic theories and ideas from the field of adult education have also contributed helpful theoretical concepts for use by systemic supervisors. This book takes many of these ideas further as they are grappled with, critiqued and operationalized in different settings--within agencies and training institutes.

Charlotte Burck is a Consultant Systemic Psychotherapist, Trainer and Researcher in the Child and Family Department of the Tavistock Clinic, London. Her books include 'Gender and Family Therapy' (with Gwyn Daniel), 'Gender, Power and Relationships' (with Bebe Speed)), 'Mirrors and Reflections: Processes of Systemic Supervision' (edited with Gwyn Daniel) and 'Multilingual Living: Explorations of Language and Subjectivity'. Her interests include supervision and consultation, systemic research, and developing clinical work with families who have experienced domestic violence and enduring parental conflict. Gwyn Daniel is a systemic psychotherapist and trainer at the Tavistock Clinic who has experience of working in both children's services and in adult mental health. She has run workshops on this topic in London, Oxford, Belfast and Sydney. She is co-author of 'Gender and Family Therapy' (with Charlotte Burck), 'Growing Up in Stepfamilies' (with Gill Gorell Barnes, P. Thompson and N. Burckhardt) and co-editor of 'Mirrors and Reflections: Processes in Systemic Supervision' (with Charlotte Burck) as well as many other professional articles and book chapters.
