The Vagabond King is a coming of age story in which sixteen year old Chris discovers that the man he was raised to believe was his father is actually not. Then, when his mother dies of cancer, his world collapses around him and he falls into an abyss of meaninglessness and teen depression not knowing who he truly is and not even sure of his real name.

Rudely awakened from his pampered existence, and questioning his many possible names and their meanings he is haunted by a mysterious apparition that forces him to embark upon a quest to find himself.

After running away from home, he seeks refuge in the home of Magda, a middle aged waitress with a penchant for sex, who he hopes will “make a man of him”. But, when he reaches the point of spiritual despair, she offers words of encouragement and tells him stories from ancient mythology to guide him through his dark night of the soul.

Thus begins a metaphysical mystery that weaves together ancient mythology, astronomy, and the surprising history of Magda’s father, a cigarette smoking, beer swilling immigrant.

At first, Chris hates this old man because he spends his last days, pining over the loss of his wife, listening to old Blues records and making Chris fetch him fresh cans of beer. But, when the old man tells tales of terror under the Communist regime, his daring escape and the mysterious medallion he wears, Chris learns that, like the old man's skipping records, history repeats itself and the roles we play have been played many times before.

The fine line between love and hate

Whew! This book is no picnic. If you're looking for a mindless read to sit back and relax with after a hard week, this isn't it. That is not to say that I wasn't hooked from the very first paragraph. The first sentence, in fact. Right after the four word prologue. "A long time ago..."

"The morning after my mother's death, I was surprised to see the sun rise."

How can you put a book down after that?

There were times I would have liked to throw in the towel. Who wants to be dragged a second time, by the hair, flipping pages as you go, through the tedious muck of adolescence? Christopher, Conway's quintessential teen-age protagonist, really isn't all that likable. He's spoiled, petulant and prone to pages of banal, sophomoric philosophizing. What's the point of money if we're just going to die anyway? He runs away from his upper-middle class life of privilege and opportunity and shows up at the door step of Magda, a waitress he is infatuated with who is old enough to be his mother, and who he discovers after it is too late, lives with and supports her first generation Hungarian immigrant father. So, yes, Conway has a sense of humor, and, he tosses out a lot of really savory literary treats to reward us for sticking with his beast of a hero. The actual Vagabond King (and the real hero, in my opinion) is Lazlo Mihali, Magda's father and the mentor who guides Chris (he's changed his name and become a Buddhist vegetarian who refuses to eat the meals Magda provides and cooks for him) through his self-pity and angst and sets him, both feet on the ground, off to confront real life; an endeavor filled with enough honest to god misery and suffering there isn't any point in trying to dredge up more as far as Lazlo is concerned. Lazlo Mihali has become an all time favorite character for me. Conway portrays him perfectly. I can hear his accent, smell his stinky beer and cigarette polluted body odor, but, best of all are his stories. His love of airplanes and his descriptions of Hungarian food and his tales of life during the Communist invasion and regime.

There is a lot in this book. There are plenty of beautiful, clever, original turns of phrase. There is a plot and a few sub-plots; some well developed characters; but, the most important aspect of this book for me was that it had a moral. Not just any moral, but one that few authors would have the courage to propose in an age when the individual's search for self has become the driving force of humanity. Conway reminds us not to get so caught up looking for the meaning of our existence that we wake up one day and realize it's passed us by. This book probably won't make James Conway a famous man in his lifetime. But if the world and literature survive into the next age, The Vagabond King will probably be a classic.

Absorbing contemporary fiction

Chris found out, courtesy of his unwitting rowing parents, that the man he thought was his father was not. After his mum dies the 16 year old is haunted by a being urging him to look deeper at himself. His adoptive father is a no - nonsense kind of man who doesn't have any time for finding oneself and Chris leaves home. He seeks out acquaintance & middle-aged waitress Magda, envisioning her as both a lover and guide in life. The reality is that she lives with her immigrant Hungarian father, a man lost in the past, with nothing more in his life than beer and the Blues.

This is a story about young man finding his way in life, and also about how history repeats itself. Magda is well read and teaches Chris about various deities and the common threads running through many religions and belief systems. She is teasing yet seems to have an affection for the young man they take in. The Old Man shares his life story and Chris, initially repulsed by him, gradually begins to understand him. His stories about the events leading up to his flight from Hungary paint a picture of a survivor. I liked Chris, who battles between wanting the bright future his father sees for him and the need to discover who he really is, and his desire to travel to Europe.

I found this book an absorbing read, and while I can't quite put my finger on it there is something special about it. Perhaps it is the merger of beliefs and mythology with the gritty details of a life hard lived, played out with a background of soulful Blues. In places it felt a little repetitive, but that may have been an intentional echo of the call and response style of the Blues. The end caught me unawares and added another dimension to the story.

I really enjoyed this book and the feelings it evoked as I read. It also made me think as I read, no bad thing!

How can you look at your life the same when you find out the man you grew up thinking is your father really isn't? Once Chris' mother dies, he takes off to `find himself' - to look deep inside himself and discover who he really is and what he's meant for. Along the way he meets Magda and her father, who both end up teaching him some important life lessons. All along, Chris still fights within himself to decide if he should follow the future his adoptive father sees for him or to strike out on his own for good and travel the world as he finds out more about himself.

Thought-provoking and absorbing, The Vagabond King will strike a chord within your heart and mind. Blending mythology, religion, and music with the harsh light of reality brings us something unique and creative. Mr. Conway has written a soulful and soul-searching novel of a young man's coming of age.

About the Author
Katie Chin was born and raised in Minneapolis by her award-winning restaurateur mother, Leeann Chin. She is the co-author of Everyday Chinese Cooking (Clarkson Potter, 2000) and author of 300 Best Rice Cooker Recipes and Everyday Thai Cooking. She was co-host with her mother, Leeann, of the 2003 national PBS cooking series Double Happiness. Katie has made numerous appearances on The Today Show and has appeared in specials on The Food Network and Fine Living. She has been featured in Glamour, Family Circle, Cooking Light, Bon Appetit, Self Magazine, Angeleno Magazine, Hampton Magazine, Elle Magazine, Daily Candy, Daily Variety, Real Simple and The Los Angeles Times. Katie has served as a guest judge on Food Network's Iron Chef America and appeared on Cooking Channel's Food(ography) program in 2013. When not testing out her new recipes on family and friends, she divides her time as a private chef and culinary consultant. Asian cuisine is my absolute favorite. But admittedly

Asian cuisine is my absolute favorite. But admittedly, I was very intimidated to cook dishes on my own...until now. Katie Chin's recipes are easy to follow making these dishes approachable yet authentic. There is a very helpful section highlighting all of the key Chinese ingredients you need to know as well as basic cooking techniques. I've tried many of Katie's delicious recipes and all have been welcomed with rave reviews from friends and family. Firecracker shrimp, Canton-style chow mein and glazed salmon have become regulars in my kitchen which was once devoid of any Chinese creations. Katie also weaves in wonderful and personal anecdotes that will keep you entertained throughout the entire book. Highly recommend!

Great for beginners!

The recipes were easy enough for a great meal. I like to cook and enjoy Chinese food, however I don't trust restaurants to not use msg. So after my wife's urging I purchased a 16" wok and dove in.
Now that I'm comfortable with the various spices and sauces my backyard chef personality just wings it most of the time.
Katie and her mom are inspiring ladies. I enjoyed the family story she shares as well.
I highly recommend this book for an introduction to good Chinese dishes.

This is a fantastic cookbook. I love the explanation of ingredients, the recipes for sauces and the easy to follow but creative and delicious recipes. I would recommend to anyone who is a lover of Asian cuisine.

Good game programming book, not for C++ beginners

The book is well written, you will learn how to code 2D games with C++ and the SFML game framework. I've implemented the first game from the book, a clone of Timberman, the text was pretty easy to follow.

Despite the book claim that you will learn C++ from scratch, I would advise to know a bit of C++ or a similar language (Java, C#) when you start with this book. The book is not written as a C++ learning book for a complete beginner. It may be possible to "learn by doing", but you will need to be very disciplined and be OK with copying code from the book that you don't understand completely. Personally I didn't have any problem reading the book, but I'm more of an advanced C++ programmer. I think a complete C++ beginner will be quickly overwhelmed by how much he needs to learn in order to understand what is going on with the code.

I found the title ironic

I generally don't review books I didn't really like but then I realised that I appreciate it when others are honest about what they thought about what they read.

I found it extremely difficult to get through this book - normally I love to lose myself in books, love getting caught up in the story. That did not happen in this book - I felt that the characters were kind of boring, they really didn't have much in the way of personality, plus there was no chemistry and certainly no ignition between them. I also felt that the storyline was vastly lacking in any depth - I really didn't care what happened in the book.

I wouldn't recommend this book and I won't be reading any other books by this author. But that's just my opinion.

I'm a big Kaylea Cross fan and have read all her books. I even gave her 5* for one book I read some time ago - believe me a rare thing for me to do. However, this time I'm not that happy.

Usually Cross divides her plot perfectly between suspense/military part and romance part. However, this book developed too slowly. The first half of the book was devoted to the main characters' insecurities, fears and military actions in connection with the book. More specifically, Khalia and Hunter feel an attraction towards each other right from the first time they meet but it took them nearly half the book to decide how or who would make the first step. Basically there isn't anything wrong with that, especially if the author uses this time to prepare and introduce further developments smoothly and properly. However, this didn't happen in this case. The developments of the plot were presented as if a switch was flipped.

Khalia and Hunter were likeable main characters. However, the background information on them wasn't enough to let them appear in the mind's eye and whatever bits and pieces of info were given about them appeared as if they were presented in a report, which just reinforced the impression that this book was a bit rushed.

Needless to say that I would've appreciated a better and longer sneak peak at the couple back in the States. I would also have appreciated to find out what happened with Hunter and the job development that was shortly hinted at. And believe me - the list with what I wanted and expected from this book could go on and on.

All over not a bad book but in no case and by no means up to Cross' usual standard.

Fantastic romantic suspense

This is a great military romantic suspense story. I think it's hard to pull off the realism of such a gritty theme, but Kaylea Cross does it well. Khalia's father died at the hands of radical militants so after his death she takes over the non-profit group he had started in Pakistan to help with the education of girls. She's nervous about going there and I liked that aspect of her personality. She's a realistic character who understands that her life will be in danger when she goes to Pakistan. Yet, she does it anyway. To me, that's what makes her brave. When she gets there she meets Hunter, leader of the Titanium Security group who will be protecting her. They get off to a rocky start because of some issues she has but that's short lived and the chemistry between them is scorching.

Hunter isn't exactly thrilled about being leader of her protective detail, especially after she questions whether he was actually a SEAL or not. But he and his team do their job and before he knows it, she's completely gotten under his skin. Neither of them want to feel the intense attraction but it's there and they both have to face it.

While she's at the girl's school her foundation is supporting, they're attacked and from there the action is non-stop. Trying to outrun, outmaneuver and outthink the militants who are determined to see her dead makes this an awesome romantic suspense. There were some twists and turns I didn't see coming and the romance was scorching but still sweet. Hunter is such an alpha hero, but not an alpha jerk. I really loved his character and the way he interacted with Khalia. And I can't wait to see the rest of the Titanium Security guys get their own story.

If you've read Kaylea Cross before you won't be disappointed. And if you haven't, this is a perfect example of what romantic suspense should be like. It's realistic and gritty, but the romance and suspense blended perfectly together making this book impossible to put down.

About the Author

Jeffrey Bennett

Jeffrey Bennett, a recipient of the American Institute of Physics Science Communication Award, holds a B.A. in biophysics (UC San Diego), and an M.S. and Ph.D. in astrophysics (University of Colorado). He specializes in science and math education and has taught at every level from preschool through graduate school. Career highlights including serving 2 years as a visiting senior scientist at NASA headquarters, where he developed programs to build stronger links between research and education, and proposing and helping to develop the Voyage scale model solar system on the National Mall (Washington, DC). He is the lead author of textbooks in astronomy, astrobiology, mathematics, and statistics, and of critically acclaimed books for the public including Beyond UFOs (Princeton University Press, 2008/2011), Math for Life (Bid Kid Science, 2014), What Is Relativity? (Columbia University Press, 2014), and On Teaching Science (Big Kid Science, 2014). He is also the author of six science picture books for children, including Max Goes to the Moon, The Wizard Who Saved the World, and I, Humanity; all six have been launched to the International Space Station and read aloud by astronauts for NASA’s Story Time From Space program. Seth Shostak

Seth Shostak earned his B.A. in physics from Princeton University (1965) and a Ph.D. in astronomy from the California Institute of Technology (1972). He is currently a senior astronomer and Director of the Center for SETI Research at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, where he helps press the search for intelligent cosmic company. For much of his career, Seth conducted radio astronomy research on galaxies and investigated the fact that these massive objects contain large amounts of unseen mass. He has worked at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Charlottesville, Virginia, as well as at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute in Groningen, the Netherlands (where he learned to speak bad Dutch). Seth also founded and ran a company that produced computer animation for television. He has written more than four hundred popular articles on various topics in astronomy, technology, film, and television. A frequent fixture on the lecture circuit, Seth gives approximately 70 talks annually at both educational and corporate institutions, and he is also a frequent commentator on astronomical matters for radio and television. His book Confessions of an Alien Hunter: A Scientist’s Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (National Geographic, 2009) details the latest ideas, as well as the personal experience of his day job. When he’s not trying to track down aliens, Seth can often be found behind the microphone, as host of the SETI Institute’s weekly one-hour radio show about science, Big Picture Science.

The characters need to be fleshed out. A few grammatical errors, but not too distracting. However, the story line is good and I will read the next one to give the author a chance to make the characters come more to life. For me, the Dwarf King seems the most real of the characters. The others, for the most part are still fairly one dimensional.
