Creatively limited. More catalogue than text

I bought this book in the expectation that I would learn about theories of DVD authoring focusing on techniques and user interface design. DVD authoring is of interest to groups as diverse as wedding videographers and instructional designers. There is a lot of technical detail in the book of the type found in product catalogues. The description of DVD layers, and so forth, is very informative. There is also a chapter listing available DVD software vendors. In fact, the book has a lot to say about DVD as a format and a technology, but rather less to say about DVD authoring. The chapter on navigation is barely above interesting. One section discusses 'advanced' navigation and introduces program control constructs (IF-THEN, FOR, etc.). Potentially very interesting but the examples of the uses of the constructs are limited to one or two lines of code; and one never gets to understand the 'features in action' in a project.
The title of the book is misleading. Production issues are addressed but very little of interest is available on authoring. If you need to learn about authoring in depth, look elsewhere.

A book for the local DVD authorer - NOT movie studio

I think both negative reviews are off base. One of them obviously sounds like they are from the direct competitor of this book - DVD Demystified.
This book to me touches on the aspects of producing a DVD as a independent producer, not a Movie Studio. The reviewer that said that it doesnt delve into the items a major studio does in DVD, needs to realize the person buying this book isnt a movie studio, but most likely a new business or producer delving into DVD for the first time. DVD Demystified is too heavy on content vs how-to in this book. The accompanying disc is nice because it is along the lines of a title someone would produce. Not a major motion picture.
The book DVD Authoring & Production" is much more of a how-to guide for developing DVD titles and touches on a lot of technical aspects that DVD Demystified does not touch on.
Also, Mr.LaBarge is a well known and wanted speaker around the globe on DVD. That merit alone makes the book a must read.

Sauntering for the Soul

Margaret is a dedicated walker, but not just through her beloved hollow or the streets of the various big cities in which she has landed throughout her life. Margaret walks with God. That sounds a little higher and mightier than it should for someone who is so down to earth, and more than she would be comfortable reading, I suspect, but it is true. The practical simplicity and intentional exercise of discovery that an unhurried walk invites is reflective of the revealed tenor of her companionship with the Holy One, and it is this simplicity of discovery to which she invites all of us within these pages.

Through well-crafted storyweaving of personal experience and Scripture, we are given time and space to step onto the path ourselves with those who have walked before us: Adam & Eve, Moses, the Israelites, Mary the mother of Jesus and Joseph her husband, Jesus himself and a number of others whose walking and stumblings are recorded for us in Scripture. We can retrace the well-traveled paths of mystery, gift, disappointment, wonder and unknowing - those familiar places of transformation that we have all experienced in various ways and times in our own lives. With a wise, good humor of self and gentle bedrock orientation of belief, Margaret's own stories, musings and lessons learned offer us companionship that is not only current with our times but congruent with the Eternal Now in the kind of walking she describes. We come to realize as we read and reflect that they are us and we are them; we are, all of us, each of us, meandering and beloved.

Typical of the integrating spirit of her other works, this book is a fresh example of The Rule of St. Benedict's sense, "nothing harsh, nothing burdensome." Though addressing spiritual hills and valleys, like the well-known spiritual companion she is, Margaret leaves out the mental gymnastics to offer instead direct, loving attention to the lived experience of the soul during such times via short, readable chapters ideal for picking up, putting down, and picking up again. Deep yet wonderfully unrarified insights may simply sneak up on you as you read and reflect yourself, inciting a growing feeling that you do not walk alone. And, I think, that just might be Margaret's mission here.

This book was purchased for a study group at my church. We are enjoying it very much, reading two chapters a week and discussing. Margaret Guenther writes so well, she is a pleasure to read. In this, she ties those stories and events from both the Old and New Testaments in the Christian Scripture to her own life, and today's world. She often gives us a new way to look at an old, old story. We are never quite sure what we will get when we pick a book for this group, but this one does not disappoint and will have us all out searching for other books by this author.

Like so many of the crafts, animation has suffered from the introduction of new technology. In this case computer-generated images have done much to displace the art of animation. It is White's intention to provide a foundation for apprenticeship training in order to preserve the animator's craft. His book is primarily a multilevel workbook. The only assumption is that the reader will be a cartoonist with an interest in animation. White lets the reader in on all pertinent aspects of animation from inbetweening to matching dialogue with the drawn pictures. At the end of each chapter there is an assignment for the practitioner. About the Author
Tony White, one of Britain's foremost animators, was head of design and background on the animated television series Jackson Five, and won first prize at the Chicago Film Festival, with his first short film, Quartet. He assisted Richard Williams, the internationally acclaimed film director, on A Christmas Carol, which won an Academy Award for animation. White lives in London with his wife and two daughters.

The Big Four

If you are an aspiring animator you have probably squeezed all you can out of Preston Blair. If "Illusion of Life" is too expensive or too heavy for you to lift, this is the book for you. One thing all three of these animation books have in common is they include pretty much everything you need to know about the fundamentals of animation. While all three books are excellent Tony White's may be the best balance of content and being a beautiful book to look at. The content contains the principals and industry insight you need to succeed in making a quality piece of animation. The book is fun to read and fun look at. The animation illustrations are very charming colorful and entertaining and reminds you of the reasons you became interested in animation in the first place. The flip animation in the corners of the pages are full color and really fun especially nice since the paper is the right thickness to give a good flip without the usual skip. This is one of the top books for you animator wannabees. If you can get your hands on the out of print Cawley/Korkis book "How to Create Animation" by Pioneer Press, and have these three others you will have every animation book for the aspiring animator you will ever need or likely want.

Best for Beginners - and Beyond

Agreeing with all the great things previously said about this book, I can only add that "The Animator's Workbook" is the best book suited for artists just starting out in animation. It is thorough, practical and motivating, without being intimidating. If you know anybody - young or old - who wants to get into animation but does not know where to start, studying "The Animator's Workbook" is a great beginning.

Great for computer animators too

I first stumbled upon this book when I was learning to do character animation with a 3D computer program. I found that I could learn the principles easily by doing the exercises in the book with my 3D software. Now I teach character animation, and I use Tony's section on the walk cycle to teach students how to do it in 3D. The book is clear and easy to understand, there are lots and lots of illustrations, and the price is great. If you want to learn character animation in 3D and you know little or nothing about it, this is THE book to get. It contains all the principles you'll find in higher-priced books on digital character animation.

The first edition of this book, Ecosystem Geography, examined the distribution of ecosystems at different scales, and the processes that have differentiated them. It presented the principles for ecosystems mapping and explored the connections between ecosystem geography, conservation, and management. Ecosystem Geography was written in 1996, at a time when few published materials on ecosystem geography were available, and none had systematically elaborated the principles underlying the mapping of ecosystems in a form accessible to advanced students and practitioners. This second edition, Ecosystem Geography: From Ecoregions to Sites, builds on the strengths of its predecessor, incorporating new information and clarifying concepts presented in the first edition. Bailey is a geographer with the United States Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station, in Fort Collins, Colorado, and the former leader of the agency's Ecosystem Management Analysis Center. Understanding Ecosystem Dynamics

Most people find pleasure in being part of the wildness of a natural environment. There is a diversity and complexity that fascinates and inspires awe. Yet, what makes up the uniqueness of a particular environment has been debated for a long time. Most often when looking at nature we try to see the parts as stable entities rather than the dynamics of whole system.
In this book, Dr. Bailey has taken a Geographers prospective of looking at the whole and then showing how the parts fit together. His solution of this world scale jigsaw puzzle has produced an unmatched insight into ecosystem structure and function. He explains how regional ecosystem boundaries are a function of climate properties that provide the energy to sustain life. At a different scale, other inputs from geology, soil, watershed, and physiography temper the mix of life forms that form an ecosystem.
Throughout this book the emphasis is on spatial relationships among the components that make up ecosystems. However these are not static systems because, at all scales, spatial units of ecosystems and their processes also interact to provide life sustaining natural services.
This is one science book that is easy to read because Dr. Bailey took a great deal of care to explain his reasoning using familiar terms. There is an excellent glossary to explain concepts contained in those words that are not so familiar. Numerous pictures and illustrations clearly present the many ecosystem concepts covered in this book. Finally, a map inside the back cover illustrates the Ecoregions of the Continents.

Intermediate Financial Theory is intended primarily for students seeking a master's degree and advanced MBAs taking a course in finance. This text is for those who find the doctoral texts excessively abstract and introductory texts too elementary.

The market for financial textbooks is crowded at both the introductory and doctoral levels, but much less so at the intermediate level. Teaching opportunities at this level, however, are multiplying rapidly with the advent of masters of science programs in finance (master in computational finance, in mathematical finance, and the like) and the strengthening demand for higher-level courses in MBA programs.

The Masters in Banking and Finance Program at the University of Lausanne admitted its first class in the fall of 1993. One of the first such programs of its kind in Europe, its objective was to provide advanced training to finance specialists in the context of a one-year theory-based degree program. In designing the curriculum, it was felt that students should be exposed to an integrated course that would introduce a wide breadth of topics in financial economics, similar to what is found at the doctoral level. Such exposure could, however, ignore the particulars and detailed proofs and arguments and concentrate on the larger set of issues and concepts to which any advanced practitioner should be exposed.

Our ambition in this text is, accordingly, first to review rigorously and concisely the main themes of financial economics (those that students should have encountered in prior courses) and, second, to introduce a number of frontier ideas of importance for the evolution of the discipline and of relevance from a practitioner's perspective. We want our readers to be at ease with the main concepts of standard finance (MPT, CAPM, etc.) while also being aware of the principal new ideas that have marked the recent evolution of our discipline. Contrary to introductory texts, we aim at depth and rigor; contrary to higher-level texts, we do not emphasize generality. Whenever an idea can be conveyed through an example, this is the approach we chose. We have, similarly, ignored proofs and detailed technical matters unless a reasonable understanding of the related concept mandated their inclusion. Throughout the book the emphasis is on the notion of competitive financial equilibrium—what it means and how it is characterized in a variety of contexts ranging from the Arrow-Debreu model to the consumption capital asset pricing model. These concepts are presented as a platform for an in-depth understanding of the newer arbitrage pricing approaches.

Intermediate Financial Theory is intended primarily for masters level students with a professional orientation, a good quantitative background, and a preliminary education in business and finance. As such, the book is targeted for masters students in finance, but it is also appropriate for an advanced MBA class in financial economics, one with the objective of introducing students to the precise modeling of many of the concepts discussed in their capital markets and corporate finance classes. In addition, we believe the book will be a useful reference for entering doctoral candidates in finance whose lack of prior background might prevent them from drawing the full benefits of the abstract material typically covered at that level. Finally, it is a useful refresher for well-trained practitioners.

As far as prerequisites go, we take the view that our readers will have completed at least one introductory course in finance (or read the corresponding text) and will not be intimidated by mathematical formalism. Although the mathematical requirements of the book are not large, some confidence in the use of calculus as well as matrix algebra is helpful.

Over the years, we have benefited from numerous discussions with colleagues over issues related to the material included in this book. We are especially grateful to Paolo Siconolfi and Jeremy Staum, both of Columbia University. We are also indebted to several generations of teaching assistants—Francois Christen, Philippe Gilliard, Tomas Hricko, Aydin Akgun, Paul Ehling—and of MBF students at the University of Lausanne who have participated in the shaping of this material. Accurate title for an excellent book

This book does admirably what it sets out to do - provide a bridge between MBA-level finance texts and PhD-level texts. While the mathematical prerequisites are relatively limited (comfort with matrices and Lagrangians), they may not be in the toolkit of most MBAs. (Note that many books claim to require little prior mathematical training, but this one actually does so.)
This book may be a good one for Ph.D students outside finance who need some basic training in financial theory or for those looking for a more user-friendly introduction to advanced theory.
The exercises are very good. There are some typographical errors but no more than typical for this kind of book.

Engineering design must be carefully planned and systematically executed. In particular, engineering design methods must integrate the many different aspects of designing and the priorities of the end-user.

Engineering Design (3rd edition) describes a systematic approach to engineering design. The authors argue that such an approach, applied flexibly and adapted to a particular task, is essential for successful product development. The design process is first broken down into phases and then into distinct steps, each with its own working methods. The third edition of this internationally-recognised text is enhanced with new perspectives and the latest thinking. About the Author

Dr.Ing. Gerhard Pahl graduated from the Technical College of Darmstadt in 1954 and spent the next 10 years involved with the initial start-up, construction and development of turbomachines with Brown, Boveri and Cie. During the years between 1965 and 1990, Dr.Ing. Pahl was professor for Mechanical Components and Engineering Design at the Technical College of Darmstadt. He was vice-president of the German Research Foundation from 1978 to 1984 and is a member of the Berlin Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences.

Dr.Ing. Joerg Feldhusen graduated from the Technical University of Berlin in 1989. Between 1989 and 1994 he was the department head of Electronic Design at AEG Westinghouse Transportation Systems, Berlin. He then went on to become head of design and development of the Duewag railway vehicle manufacturing company, Duesseldorf, followed by technical manager of Siemens Light Rail, Düsseldorf and Erlangen. In 1999 he was made professor for Engineering Design and in 2000 director of the Institute for General Mechanical Engineering Design Technology of the Technical College of Rhineland-Westphalia in Aachen.

Dr.Ing. Karl Grote graduated from DO Berlin in 1984 and then studied for his Postdoc in the USA. In 1990 he became professor at the California State University, Long Beach, USA, before moving to the OvG Univ. Magdeburg in 1995. From October 2002 to September 2004 he was a visiting professor at the Engineering Design Research Laboratory of Professor Erik Antonsson, CalTech, Pasadena, USA.

The reference book for Systematic Approach to design!

Great, complete and really useful! When I approached this book I had only a vague idea about the argument (plus some understanding about QFD)... but now I can say I have enough knowledge about "Systematic Approach to Design" to apply on the job what I read in this book! No matter if you are a PM or "only" a designer: you should have this book on your desk!

This book probably has some real good technical content. The problem is, I cant get myself to read it. Yeah, most technical engineering books aren't real exciting, but I enjoy them anyway. Most of them I pick up and read in a somewhat cover to cover style, but this book is way to boring. I tried a few times to keep reading, hoping that it would get to part where I might learn some good "Engineering Design" stuff. Unfortunately, I think I have given up on it. Now I have another very expensive shelf weight.

CHRISTINE M. PIOTROWSKI, ASID, IIDA, has more than twenty years of commercial and residential design experience. She was an interior design professor at Northern Arizona University and currently provides consulting services to interior designers on business practices from Phoenix, Arizona. She was the 2004 winner of the ASID/Polsky Prize and is the author of the highly respected Professional Practice for Interior Designers, also from Wiley and soon to be in its fourth edition.
