Review

In converting her lectures to this fascinating book,Hermanconvincingly argues that closely analyzing works of art is an empowering exercise that translates to seeing the 'hidden' clues in many real-life scenarios. Perhaps most compelling are the author's descriptions of actual crime scenes that were only solved because someone noticed the right detail—a pair of inside-out pants, a whirling ceiling fan—when most people missed it. Yet despite her expert clientele,Hermanamply demonstrates that tapping into an inner Sherlock Holmes isn't only a skill for investigators and that heightened observation is critical to communicating effectively, empathizing with others, and making informed decisions. With practice, she argues, everyone has an innate "visual intelligence" waiting to be refined. Sharp and original, this book should alter how readers look at the world."
—Kirkus Reviews

“This fascinating and beautifully illustrated book will make you see the world more clearly than you ever have before. And that clarity will transform how you deal with the challenges and opportunities you face every day.”
—Leonard Mlodinow, author of Subliminal and The Drunkard’s Walk

“Amy Herman has transformed the way I look at art -- and at the world. She shows us when to trust our instincts as observers and when to recognize that our instincts have gone astray. So much wisdom flows from those lessons, which are set forth clearly and convincingly in this book.”
—Professor Ari L. Goldman, Columbia University, author of The Search for God at Harvard and The Late Starters Orchestra.

“In her masterful new book, Amy Herman offers a compelling case for the life enhancing value—and central importance—of careful observation. Within these pages Herman teaches us how to be active and attentive observers, both within the confines of an art museum and well beyond. Visual Intelligence is a fascinating book, and an important one—and it is a great read.”
—Daniel Weiss, President, The Metropolitan Museum of Art

“Whether you are a seasoned criminal investigator or a medical professional, Amy Herman's Visual Intelligence is a must read. She engages us all to see more objectively, analyze intelligently and to articulate in greater detail. It will guide you to be a more critical observer of what is before you without making those inadvertent assumptions that may sabotage your work.”
—John J Sprague, Inspector, Commanding Officer, Force Investigation Division, NYPD

Training Your Observation Through Looking At Art
By Dr. Cathy Goodwin
The first time I visited the National Gallery in London, I went on a docent tour. The docents weren't volunteers: they were art students and teachers who really knew their stuff, and I believe they were paid. That's where I learned to look at art.

The guides didn't try to cover the whole museum. They spent lots of time with a single piece of art. Many of them began with the question, "What do you see?"

Since then I've been back many times and each time I appreciated what the guides were doing. And when I go to a museum myself, I don't dash through in a frenzy. I've spent lots of time - not hours, but close - with objects that particularly engaged or puzzled me. And I do the same with historical and archeological museums.

So I had some idea where Amy Herman was coming from. She takes it to another level and she asks different questions. An art guide will ask about the artist's intention. Why did the artist choose these colors? Where does our eye go? Why is this object in the center of the painting - does the artist believe it's important?

Amy encourages us to look at details, to notice the traces of wine in a glass and remember how many objects were on a table. She encourages the reader to look - really look - at a work of art to increase your powers of observation. The idea is that after studying works of art, you'll take those powers of observation to real life. She cites dozens of examples of groups of people who increased their skills after taking her courses.

As a reviewer with an advance reading copy, I had trouble going through the exercises. The art works will be in 4-color reproductive form in the final published work; reviewers get grainy black and white. So to test the exercises, I took out my trusty iPad and looked up the works online. Of course this action conflicted with Amy's directive to ignore the artist and title: I had to use those signifiers to locate the works online! Still, I found the exercises enjoyable. And I realized my observation skills could be sharpened with practice.

What's not clear is how these exercises will translate into real life based on a book rather than a class. I've always liked the fact that art can be studied because it doesn't move or change; if you're analyzing music, you have to be able to catch what's playing in real time. In life, the things you observe tend to move and morph while you're watching. And it's difficult to look closely at a work in a book, as compared to a museum when you've got the original on the wall.

It's also frustrating to be working through these exercises alone, as compared to a group. Often when I've looked at a painting (and i tend to spend more time with painting than sculpture) I come away with an awareness - a story line that makes sense. But I also feel like a mystery reader who's left with loose ends, because there's no way to verify my own observations. With the Internet, you can often find detailed commentaries on well-known artworks, but even then your questions don't always get answered.

The author's writing style is engaging. I enjoyed reading the book and plan to dip into the exercises periodically. And, of course, I'm planning more museum visits to hone my skills even more.

Highly Recommended
By William D. Hooper
Lawyer/Art Historian/Teacher Amy Herman’s book is important. Why? Because it can sharpen your thinking skills, and improve the quality of your decisions.

How? By showing you with 70+ artworks in 11 chapters how to more objectively observe and assess visual and other sensory information, and how to precisely communicate about it. Then, how to make better decisions using this more objective information, while factoring in both what is unknown and what you wish you knew about a situation.

Ms. Herman’s book will enhance the performance of high school, college and graduate school students. In my view, it should be required reading. I say this as an engineer, businessman, and graduate in art and aesthetics. It is also very useful to professionals who depend especially on their visual skills to make decisions – often in a split second involving life and death.

I have also read some of the criticisms of the book. For instance, yes, the pictures are small. But, they are large enough to make the needed points. And, if necessary, one can easily reference a larger image of a cited artwork on the internet.

Again, I highly recommend Visual Intelligence. There is a lot of value for the dollar in this book.

the good: it teaches you how to be more observant
By Amazon Customer
the good: it teaches you how to be more observant, how to look at the same scene from different angles, and different points of view ( " walk in their shoes"). i, myself, am already trained in this, albeit i did pick up tips & pointers along the way. for for untrained eye, it's well worth the time. the bad: the author toots her own horn a little too often. also, while using museum quality art to make her point and show us things we may have never been aware of, the actual pictures in the book are just too darn small! they should at least take up half the page, if not a full, single page. i can only attribute this to the the publisher, who would have had to use more pages, ergo, more money to produce the same book. one more thing, the white dust jacket isn't glossy, so every smudge & fingerprint become permanent. don't say "goodbye", just say " see ya later".

My First Foray Into Roman History and I've Never Been the Same Since
By Fred W. Anson (aka "Mr. IT")
This is a combined review for the audiobook editions of both "I, Claudius" and "Claudius the God" by Robert Graves.

Like so many others, I was drawn to these books after watching the 1976 PBS adaption which enthralled and intrigued me. This was my first foray into Roman history and I've never been the same since. That said, for those (like me) comparing Jack Pulman's screenplay to the actual book will be both impressed and disgusted. Mr. Pulman certainly got all the plot points but in the process of doing do took some curious "liberties" with both the source material and (I've come to find out) history itself. I won't disappoint the reader by revealing of to what exactly I'm referring - better if you ferret it out yourself, I think.

So how are the books, you may ask? Simply amazing. I know it's a cliche' but the books are most definitely better than the movie. And Derek Jacobi's reading is just as inspired and delightful as his screen performance was as Claudius in the PBS mini-series. I enjoyed them both immensely and will, no doubt, be taking another trip through them both again.

Finally I am a Christian, and as a final note to my fellow believers I encourage these books and/or the PBS television series for no other reason than to put the New Testament in historical context from the Roman side. I think you'll find, as I did, your depth, breadth, and understanding of the Gospels, Book of Acts, and the epistles exploding as you work through Mr. Grave's fine research and writing.

Highest recommendation. These books are classics!

Brings early imperial characters vividly to life.
By SCOTT M WILSON
Really nice piece of historical fiction. Brings early imperial characters vividly to life. Claudius as a character is a great vehicle for this clever narrative.

I initially picked up the story as a pre-Italy vacation book. Now I can't wait to see the room from "Villa Livia" in the Museo Nazionale Romano (Palazzo Massimo Alle Terme). What a wonderfully monstrous character she was!

The beginning of the book flew by, then it got a bit bogged down until Caligula took power toward the last stretch of the book. He was worth the wait - what a terror. Some of the names are tough to follow. Lots of characters zip by, but the author does a good job of jogging your recollection of some of the recurring or important minor ones.

Having savored the completion of the book for a couple of days now, I think the things that will stay with me are:

--> how familiar tyranny is whenever it occurs in history
--> how interesting that this was written in the 1930s with fascism on the rise
--> Caligula was totally outrageous - but familiar at the same time
--> how remarkable it is that some people ever assume power -- perhaps few so remarkable as poor Claudius
--> wow - the power of poison

What can I say -- Robert Graves was an utter genius!
By Stephanie L. Thompson
First, let me explain about the sexual content: It is not vivid, does not take up much of the narrative, and is definitely not a reason to keep your child from reading the book if you happen to be blessed with a child who wants to read something beyond Hunger Games and the subsequent rip-offs of Hunger Games.

I first knew of Robert Graves for his poetry and for a marvelous historical work of his, The Long Weekend, which is among my favorite history books. When I came across this work of his, I was intrigued because the Julio-Claudians have always seemed to me to be the most interesting of Rome's dynasties. I think it's because of the dynamic women involved behind the scenes and not-so-behind the scenes.

What Graves has done here is to take incredibly well-researched history and turn it into a novel that is amazingly factual (he really doesn't make up much so much as he speculates a bit -- and frankly, his speculations are probably right considering his vast knowledge of the period) and yet also compelling and vivid. Claudius, one of the saner Julio-Claudians (this being the dynasty that brought us Nero and Caligula) is the narrator, telling the story of his incredible grandmother Livia and how she secretly was the true power ruling Rome -- and also, incidentally, an incredibly depraved and evil woman, too! It goes into the deep, personal stories behind a great many Romans with whom most people only experience a momentary grade school acquaintance. The writing style has a very appealing sarcastic humor at times, though most of the book is more of a drama than a comedy.

I would highly recommend this to anyone with even the slightest interest in Roman history, or just anyone who likes a really well-written narrative. Having taught high school for several years, I can also with confidence recommend this as a great book for teens and preteens. If you have a son or daughter preparing to take AP World History, this would be an excellent summer reading book to help him/her prepare to leap into the course (and, again, the vast majority of the book is actually true, so it can make great fodder for fleshing out an essay better in the heat of an AP exam).

An Indispensable Guide For Entrepreneur Authors
By John Chancellor
A few years back if you had dreams of publishing a book, there were a number of gatekeepers standing between you and your dream. The publishing company would only work through a literary agent. And there were lots of hurdles within the publishing company. Once published, there was the issue of distribution. Now most of those hurdles no longer exist. But that has been a blessing and a curse.

For those entrepreneurs desiring to publish their own book, it is a fairly level playing field. However, with the disappearance of all the gatekeepers a lot of quality control has also disappeared. Unfortunately, the entrepreneurial bias for action has led to a lot of poorly written books. Instead of the book serving to highlight the authority of the author, it has often raised questions about their capabilities.

I believe that a well written book is one of the best things an entrepreneur can do to separate themselves from the crowd. But a well written book requires a lot of planning and structure. If it is just a brain dump, or a loose collection of ideas, it will not provide the results most entrepreneurs/authors hope for.

So before you spend any serious time at the keyboard writing, spend some quality time with Jacqui Pretty’s Book Blueprint – How Any Entrepreneur can Write and Awesome Book. It will pay huge dividends.

You would not start a new business segment without a well-developed business plan. You should not start writing a book with a carefully crafted plan.

The Book Blueprint is divided into four parts. Part One covers the right idea. You need to be writing about a topic that fulfills a need for the target audience. Under Part One, Jacqui covers the different styles of books you could write. Choose the style that fits your subject, your writing style and your audience.

Part Two covers the right structure. If you don’t have a good structure to your book, the reader will struggle with digesting the content. This is crucial to writing an awesome book. She gives some excellent suggestions of developing a good structure.

Part Three takes the structure and fleshes out the content. In addition to adding meat to the skeleton, she shows how to engage the reader using stories.

Part Four adds the right language – talking about the power of plain English and adding your own personality.

This is truly a Blueprint. She takes you step by step through the process of defining your subject matter, creating the right structure, adding the content and ensuring your writing is engaging and easy to read. Ms. Pretty uses mind mapping to give you a complete blueprint.

Ms. Pretty is a professional editor/wordsmith. So the book is well designed, well written and easy to read. If you simply follow the blueprint, you will create a much better book with a lot less work. She is Australian so be prepared for some differences in spelling.

I get numerous requests from authors to review their books. I can now recommend this book as a guide to improve their writing. I would be so thankful if more authors read this before writing their book. Doing it right the first time is so much easier.

I was provided a review copy of this book.

This is a To Do, Not Just Read!
By S. Dargin
A blinking cursor, confusing stories, and 4 unfinished attempts, this was exactly what I needed to get me unstuck. I’ve been using this book for 6 months to write my own well over due book. I’ve been an entrepreneur for over 20 years.

If you are an entrepreneur and need your awesome book out in the world, this is for you. It is a workbook, and is best used if you do it and not just read it. At times it feels like there are more questions and exercises. The instructions are clear and easy to execute. First she identifies and helps you figure out which of the five core types of books an entrepreneur should write: memoir, how-to, list, thought leader, or interview. Then she helps you set up the core message of the book and each chapter, the introduction, and the closing based on the book type. The last two chapters are the Cherry on the Top, engagement, and The Right Language, wordsmithing, that’s what I’m working on now. The Blueprint method works and I am grateful for it – thank you! The author walks her talk.

The only complaint I have is paperback physical format, this is a workbook and the pages don’t fold flat or stay open. I had to pin them up or prop them open with a heavy object. The online templates don’t add anything beyond what is in the book already. I highly recommend this for the entrepreneur who is stuck with a book inside them. It is a step by step guide and somewhat of a formula, yet flexible and adaptable to meet your needs and let your authentic voice come through.

As a disclaimer, I received this book for free for my honest review, and I had never heard of the author before and am grateful for her and don’t know her – we live on different contents!

Jacqui's book is simply brilliant and brilliantly simple
By Annette Baulch
Jacqui's book is simply brilliant and brilliantly simple! As an entrepreneur I have been keen to write about my passion. I learned some writing basics and had a go but as I looked over my words felt the book was missing something and wasn't sure what. I hadn't sent it off to an editor yet and knew this would help but I also suspected it would be worthwhile to have an even better understanding of the process myself. Along came Book Blueprint at just the right time. I had been resistant to too much pre planning as it is not my style and felt it might cramp my creativity but it has been the exact opposite! Better organization helped me get really clear that my idea was a good one, what format was best to deliver it in, how to lay out ideas and chapters, add stories, quotes and so many ideas on format and much more that I now feel so much more confident about sending my book off to the editor (and think I have saved a bundle on editing too). My only regret is that I didn't start with Jacqui's book right at the beginning. I know I definitely will be next time. Do yourself the favour as well.

Downtime: Helping Teenagers Pray, by Mark Yaconelli

"You know the reality: teens don’t have much downtime in their lives. Between school, extra-curricular activities, jobs, friends (and youth group!), students these days barely have enough time to do all the things they need to do in a day. It’s no wonder that quiet, reflective time in prayer with God is not high on their priority list. With years of experience helping teens encounter God in quiet, contemplative ways, Mark Yaconelli will give you the tools and insights needed to help teens understand why and how to pray, and to guide them towards a life of prayer. You’ll find several prayer exercises in this book, based on the praying tradition of the Christian church, along with instructions to help you introduce the prayers to students. Not only are there explorations of classical methods of prayer that involve silence, solitude, and scripture, but you’ll also discover more recent forms of prayer that use creative media, music, writing, movement, and acts of compassion. As you help teens bring prayer into their everyday lives, your students will find that they long for those times when they can step away from it all and find rest and comfort in God."

Finally a youth book worth five stars
By J. Snyder
This has been a long time coming, but is here at last. YS (through Zondervan) sent me a new book by one of my favorite authors of youth ministry stuff, Mark Yaconelli, son of Mike Yaconelli who used to be the CEO of youthspecialties.

A little caveat, if you do not work with youth (which you really ought to), you might find this post boring.

This book is a description of how to help teens pray. Young Yac wrote an excellent book on contemplative youth ministry, which in my opinion is a must read for youth pastors. His whole bent is not entertaining, but rather helping teens find God in the quiet places. In other words, being still so we can know that He is God. While the first book described youth ministry philosophy, this book is really an intro to prayer. I found it helpful in my own prayer life, as well as full of ideas regarding how to lead teens in prayer.

Note: teens are always seen as peers on a journey to God in this book rather than underlings.

The first part of the book is a philosophy of prayer, and the main portion is a description of many different ways to actually do it. Basicaly, the premise of the book is that prayer should be the foundation of youth ministry, not just regulated to brief popcorn prayers for the last five minutes of the class. Prayer is formative (it changes who we are), rather than our informative (only effecting part of our lives)teachings.

The proof that this is an effective work is in the result. I know a book is worth buying if I actually use it in the ministries I lead. I have used this book in nearly every youth meeting I have led since reading it. Definitely worth the investment. I cannot recommend this book enough to fellow youth workers.

The information in this book is excellent based on ten years of research that the author acguired. The prayer exercises are very appropriate for teenagers. The content is aligned with other books and authorities who studied prayer.

Operating systems kernels are central to the functioning of computers. Security of the overall system, as well as its reliability and responsiveness, depend upon the correct functioning of the kernel. This unique approach – presenting a formal specification of a kernel – starts with basic constructs and develops a set of kernels; proofs are included as part of the text.

From the Back Cover

The kernel of any operating system is its most critical component, the remainder of the system depends upon a correctly functioning and reliable kernel for its operation – what is more, a kernel that has security flaws can be exploited by malicious users. Kernels are notoriously complex and hard to understand.

The purpose of this book is to show that the formal specification of kernels is not only possible but also necessary if operating systems are to achieve the levels of reliability and security that is demanded of them today. Specifications of a sequence of kernels of increasing complexity are included, acting as models to enable the designer to identify and reason about the properties of the design – thus making explicit that which is too often left implicit or even unknown. A considerable amount of reasoning is included, showing what can be inferred about a design; and in addition, essential properties of data structures and mechanisms are discussed and the properties of these proved. Also included as an essential aspect of the activity, are the interfaces to the hardware and the processes running on them.

It is very easy to get bogged down in complexity issues when considering kernels, but this book’s prescriptive rather than descriptive approach shows how the kernel of an operating system can affect both the reliability and performance of these systems in a clear and concise style.

Iain is a fellow of the BSC and has a PhD in Computer Science.

Great if you're a frequent reader of documents written in formal logic symbols.

Two stars only because the book includes no legend to help decipher the formal logic symbols, which make up the vast majority of the book. Five stars for readers who are already FLUENT in the extended sets of formal logic symbols. A preview by sellers would help potential customers decide.

micro C/OS specification using Z
By kaizen
This book include FIFO queues, process tables and semaphores in chapter 2. In chapter 3, operating system, micro C/OS is described using objective Z schemata rather than Z.
Z is ISO/IEC standards.ISO/IEC 13568:2002 Information technology -- Z formal specification notation -- Syntax, type system and semantics.
And related standard is followint.
ISO/IEC 10165-4:1992/Amd 3:1998 Guidelines for the use of Z in formalizing the behaviour of managed objects .

I am no Z specialist nor OS specialist. And I do not have Z( and objective Z) translator to C language. So I cannot understand main part of this book.
So I request my colleague to rewrite this Z example to be utilized B methods.
Also I request another colleague to write TOPPERS/SSP(smallest set profile) specification using Z.
It should be rewrite to be utilised B methods.

This is the first book who can start to formally designe and evaluate the architecture of operating system.

About the Author
A protégée and her mentor, Emily Bennington and Skip Lineberg help recent graduates bridge the gap between college and the workforce. Motivated by the premise that free coffee shouldn’t be the sole highlight of a newbie’s workday, Emily and Skip regularly host seminars on career success. Both authors live in Charleston, West Virginia.

During her first years in the workforce, Emily Bennington helped manage a successful Supreme Court Justice race and became the spokesperson for a business that was under intense public scrutiny. After navigating such sink-or-swim experiences with the guidance of her first boss, Skip Lineberg, Emily discovered that not all graduates are blessed with great mentors. Today she is a frequent speaker at universities and organizations on the topic of career success, particularly advancing the skills of young women in the workplace and volunteering as a means of leadership development. Emily also teaches a graduate course on social media and hosts a popular career blog at www.ProfessionalStudio365.com. She is a member of the CAREEREALISM team of career experts and contributes regularly to business publications and blogs on professional development issues.

As a career newbie, Skip Lineberg learned the art of successful management at General Electric during the Jack Welch heyday. Today he applies those skills as the owner of Maple Creative, a marketing firm staffed with more than a few young professionals. Under Skip’s leadership, Maple has grown into a thriving business and garnered dozens of prestigious awards. Skip also hosts Maple’s Marketing Genius blog, which AdvertisingAge magazine named one of the 150 most influential business blogs on the Web.

Introduction

To move up, you must get noticed.
To get noticed, you must attract attention.
To attract attention, you must be distinctive.
To be distinctive, you must be known for results.

As a new professional, learning how to be a professional is your first task. Whatever career or industry you choose, if you want to be respected by colleagues, invaluable to clients, and a crackerjack to your boss, mastery of the basics of business
is essential.

Effective Immediately is designed to teach you how to survive your first year in the workforce. But we want to do more than that—we want you to become great. In a world overrun by the so-so and the okay, excellence wins, but it’s a choice you have to make every day. Long-term success—the only kind that really matters—never just happens; it is always the result of clear objectives, laser focus, and building good work habits from day one.

So if you want to be an extraordinary executive, this is your book. If you’re an enthusiastic, curious sort who is unimpressed by generic catchphrases and who wants—make that demands—to know how to be the best, this is your book.

The principles on these pages, if applied correctly, will elevate you to the top of your game. In fact, by the time you need to order new business cards, you should already have been promoted. And that’s not hyperbole, just great business.

To your success,
Emily Bennington

A Contract between You and Über-You

I, _____________________, understand that this is a critical time in my career when first impressions matter. I promise to stack the odds in my favor as much as possible by arriving at work on time every day, meeting all assigned deadlines, taking ownership of my projects, and continually asking myself, “If it were my business, would this be acceptable?”

Pursuant to same, I pledge to use this time to earn the trust and respect of my peers and subordinates. I recognize that when I am promoted to a management position, I will be responsible for leading these very colleagues.

I acknowledge that this contract is between me and myself and carries no rewards or penalties apart from accelerated success, faster promotions, and my own personal transformation from new graduate to first-class executive.

Part One
Get It Right, Right Out of the Gate

From your very first day on the job, you are being evaluated by supervisors and colleagues. Will they judge you as a rank-and-file associate or a potential leader?
The answer is often determined by the first impressions you make. And it doesn’t matter whether you are the world’s most productive, intelligent new professional—if you are perceived differently, your career will suffer.

1  /  Conquer Your First Day
Here we are, folks: the first day. And right now, you are under the microscope. Since your supervisors can’t judge you on performance and contributions yet, the focus will be on filling out piles of paperwork, getting you situated, and integrating you into the team. But make no mistake, you are being judged.

However, instead of the usual measures that will kick in once you’re settled into the position, you will be judged on some very visible, basic parameters:

• Did you show up on time?
• What are you wearing?
• Do you display confidence and charisma?
• Do you seem overwhelmed or ready for a challenge?
• How well do you communicate?
• What personal items did you put in your office?

On the first day, your mission is simple: Make a positive first impression. And the way to do that is to be very intentional about how you present yourself. Here are some tips that will help you not merely survive your first day, but conquer it with poise and professionalism.

Arrive Early
Make sure you are on-site at least ten to fifteen minutes before your official start time. If your commute involves driving or taking public transportation, consider rehearsing your route in advance. (Try to go when travel conditions are as realistic as possible; for instance, don’t make the drive on a Sunday afternoon if you’ll be traveling during weekday morning rush hour.) Giving yourself a bit of extra time will not only create some leeway if there are any unexpected delays (traffic, parking, and so on), but will also let you step into the restroom and collect yourself once you arrive. You’ll be understandably nervous, so don’t let normal first-day jitters spiral into outright panic by getting behind schedule.

Look the Part
The saying “Dress for the job you want, not the one you have” applies from your very first day at work. While every office is different and some are more casual than others, a good rule of thumb is to dress a notch above your current station. For most new employees, this means donning a high-quality, conservative suit that’s pressed and spotless, wearing shoes that are polished, and carrying a leather (or faux leather) briefcase or messenger bag. To save time on your big day, have your outfit ready the night before. Also, don’t forget to bring a pack of breath mints. Even the sharpest suit can be forgotten next to someone who smells like day-old Starbucks.

Exude Confidence
This is truly a crossroads in your life and the first step to building an extraordinary career. You’re earning your own money now, and there’s no limit to what you can achieve. Regardless of your past work or life experiences, this is an opportunity to start fresh and turn the page. Embrace it and walk tall.

Take Initiative
A great way to come across as friendly and confident right away is to proactively introduce yourself to your new colleagues. Don’t assume they should reach out to you first because it’s their workplace already. Just extend a firm handshake, smile warmly, and have some fifteen-second “about me” sound bites ready. Take some time beforehand to think about the questions you are likely to be asked and be prepared with insightful, succinct responses. In fact, we’ll make it easy—you’re probably going to be asked about:

• Your university (and its latest football record)
• Your major
• Your professors (if you encounter any alumni)
• Your hometown
• Your current role (“So, you’re our new associate, eh?”)
• Your tasks (If you don’t yet know what types of projects you’ll be assigned, just smile and say, “I’m not sure exactly what I’ll be working on yet, but I’m looking
forward to getting started.”)

Also, since you’re going to be doing lots of introductions, come up with some questions for your coworkers so the conversation is a dialogue rather than a Q & A session. You can research key players online via the company website, Google, or LinkedIn, but if all else fails, look around their office for clues on topics of interest. For example, if the walls are dripping with plaques, comment on one. If their desk is filled with family photos, ask about their children.

The point here is to realize that the impressions you’re making on the job don’t have to be left to chance. In PR, they call this “controlling the message.” You can call it being effective immediately. Are you ready? Welcome to the workforce!

Newbie to Newbie
Leave the Sequins and Pleather at Home
My first real job was for a company owned by the world’s largest fashion conglomerate and located in America’s fashion capital, New York City. I figured I had “made it” and needed to look the part. I researched all of the major fashion magazines for the latest trends and developed a work wardrobe of gold pleather pants, brightly colored tops, and excessive chunky jewelry. I even took a day-to-night approach by wearing a sequined tank that would look great after work and toning it down for the office by pairing it with simple black pants. It only took a short time to notice that no one else in the office was wearing sequins or gold pants, and that I had mistaken trendy looks from the magazines’ pages for chic business attire. I realized then that if I wanted to be treated like a professional, I had to dress accordingly.

2  /  Have Patience
Fresh out of college, many newbies think that because of their education they have immediate status and deserve lofty positions. Not so. Status is the result of accomplishment, which is the result of work. Hard, often tedious work.

Any time you are a new hire, and especially at the beginning of your career, you must build your own success from the ground up. Do not expect anyone to assume you’re talented. You have to show them—and this takes time. Usually more time than you expect.

So be patient. Don’t focus on when you’re going to move up; focus on what you’re doing now. As Sir William Osler (a pioneer of modern medicine) stated, “The best preparation for tomorrow is to do today’s work superbly well.” If at the end of each workday you can truthfully say that you worked to the best of your ability, we guarantee your success will take care of itself.

3  /  Mind Your “-Ilities”
To: Entry-Level Associates
From: The Boss
Re: Mind Your “-Ilities”

Management would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of you aboard. We are thrilled that you have chosen to work for our organization, and we know that you will be a great asset to the team.

Having said that, we would also like you to be aware that all respective department heads are now actively scouting for the company’s next “young guns.” And while other newbies will have orientation as usual (that is, they’ll be given the tour and then left alone), young guns will be handpicked for the fast track. They will be carefully groomed for big chairs in the executive suite and will be first in line for promotions, top projects, personal attention, and other perks.

If you want to become a member of the club, management recommends that you stack the odds in your favor by minding your “-ilities” (dependability, reliability, humility, accountability, responsibility, likeability, punctuality, and so on). Until we’ve had enough time to sufficiently evaluate the caliber of your work, our first impressions of you will be based on perceptible qualities, like “-ilities,” we can see for ourselves. Just thought you should know.

Sincerely,
The Boss

4  /  Prepare for the Brain Dump
Fact: When you’re new, you’re going to be overwhelmed. Everyone who seemingly knows everything about your office and its customers is going to randomly “dump” this knowledge on you in rapid, shotgun-like outbursts. Usually these brain dumps occur in stream-of-consciousness statements that begin on your first day, often before you’ve had a chance to locate the coffee maker. (“Ann will be your main client contact, but she’s out of the office on Tuesdays and every other Thursday. Here’s the supply closet; if you can’t find something here, there’s another located on the fifth floor. There are separate recycling containers for paper, cardboard, glass, and plastic—and all paper recyclables must be totally staple-free. What were we talking about a minute ago?”)

It’s a lot to take in at once, but rest assured, the brain dump happens to everyone. Prepare yourself by knowing that you will be bombarded with new people and new information coming at you from every direction. However, there are a few things you can do to manage the flow.

Study Your Business
In your first few days on the job, carve out some time to research everything you can about your company and how it operates. Explore your website, read your organization’s marketing brochures, annual reports, and proposals. Without breaching security policies, search around the intranet and read any reports, timelines, work plans, and other relevant documents you can find. Copy the best of these to your desktop, then format your work to look similar. This background will most likely answer a lot of the more basic questions that every new employee asks, so you can stand out with more targeted, insightful observations.

But Do Ask Questions—Even Basic Ones
When you’re new, you have about a two-week grace period in which coworkers will cheerfully answer any inane question you throw at them. Take advantage of this time now and use it to your benefit. Later on, they may not be so charitable.

Get Organized
When it comes to taking notes, it’s critical to keep everything in one place. Therefore you’ll want to carry your planner or a notebook with you at all times—you never know when the next brain dump will take place. (See pages 22–23 for some note-taking tips.) Also, if you work at a job where you’re responsible for multiple projects at the same time, start a new page for each one. This will give you space to go back and add notes as needed.

Stay Sane
Never allow the brain dump to visibly stress you out. Remember, people are still forming impressions of you at this point; if you can’t handle the first week without being completely overwhelmed, they’re naturally going to wonder whether you’re cut out for the job. In truth, brain dumps usually occur because most of your colleagues haven’t thought much about your arrival before you showed up, so they’re just spouting information as it comes to them. At the end of the day, take as many notes as you can, smile often, and know that in a few months you will be brain dumping on the next wide-eyed newbie—just remember to let them have some coffee first.

5  /  Don’t Expect a Lot of Hand-Holding
Regardless of where you work or what industry you’re in, there are certain processes, tools, and forms that make up the standard operating procedures of your company. Perhaps you were introduced to these through a very organized, systematic orientation. If so, great—consider yourself fortunate. If not, don’t feel shortchanged or frustrated. Instead, take initiative and master the basics on your own.

In decades past, when most people worked for huge corporations, the training process for newcomers was given greater attention. Fully staffed human resource departments handled orientation, or mid-level managers or supervisors were responsible for getting new hires up to speed.

Today, things are different. Companies have pared back layers of management and administrative functions to become leaner and more competitive. Traditional HR departments are either gone or spread thin. In addition, the world is becoming increasingly populated by small businesses, many of which have not yet developed structured processes for training new employees. As a result, basic procedures like orientation get less direct attention. (And this trend is not likely to reverse.)

So don’t wait for orientation to come to you. Go out and tackle it yourself. Ask your colleagues for help. (Be patient and persistent, though; providing this information may not be anyone’s direct responsibility.) The following chapter includes lists of questions that are typically addressed during more formal orientations.

Effective Immediately: How to not be a sloppy @#*& at work
By Qwertman
This book was a required read for an internship course at my university. I'll be brief in my review since Robyn's is pretty succinct. To me, this reads like a high school newspaper's advice column. I saw it as a good reminder of several common sense principles at best. Anyone taking the initiative to read this book is probably on-top of things enough to not need it.

As a required text, I do think it serves a good purpose for students that haven't been exposed to professional environments prior to graduating college. Overall it sends a good message.

Think this book doesn't apply to interns? Think again.
By Aristotle
In this economy, internships are where a lot of young professionals are "stuck." They really are the closest thing to a job many of us will get until we find that perfect fit. Effective Immediately is just as relevant to any intern as it is to an entry-level young gun. In fact, this book allows you to use your internship as practice for that first real job; how great is that!?

I've read this book twice - once when I secured my very first internship and then a second time to refresh my memory on things I may have forgotten. The first chapter is extremely important to new interns: arrive early, look the part, exude confidence, and take initiative. I remember myself and others showing up for our internship in suits - we secured positions in the publishing industry, not Wall Street! The first observation from our boss was "you don't need to dress like that." Boy, did I feel uncomfortable. I felt as if everyone was staring at me even when I was alone in an empty room. What I learned from this: if your industry has a jeans and t-shirt kind of crew you need to dress this part even if it feels "wrong" or "unprofessional." This obviously makes it difficult when you're looking for a job because they'll sniff you out. You'll just have to keep the suit in a bag. If you're an intern looking for a job and your office is a positive place your suit will probably bring advice and good wishes.

Throughout the book, Bennington emphasizes taking initiative and being proactive in your work, team work, and seeking out the work that nobody else wants to do. This 100x if you're an intern because you were hired specifically to do the work people WILL NOT even look at. Chatting with folks in my industry, I have heard stories about interns that would make your stomach turn. I've heard about interns who do not finish work on time, interns who don't want to make the run to the copier to make prints, and interns who are obviously lazy and not interested in working. Yes, ok, I get it... you're an intern and you don't like the grunt work. Well guess what? Your boss didn't like the grunt work back when he was an intern. Consider it part of your apprenticeship. The best way to get a job is to work hard and get recognized by people who already know you.

Bennington suggests keeping a weekly update of some sort to pass on to your boss so he knows exactly what you're working on. Does this apply to interns? Absolutely. If you're a paid intern, chances are you're doing a lot more than just filing papers. You really should let your supervisors know precisely what you're doing - especially if you're working on THEIR projects. It will keep them at ease and they'll be happy to serve as a reference when the time comes.

The above is only a sliver of frosting on the cake that is Effective Immediately. Even if you're just an intern, there is a trove of valuable information that can make your boss WANT to find a full-time position for you in his company. Written with wit and humor, Bennington's light reading and will have you giggling on your subway commute home. This title isn't written like the rest of those dry and tired career advice books. It is written with the very energy any young careerist should exude. If you're trying to get anywhere in your industry, whether it is that first promotion or that internship-turned-job-offer, I suggest you buy this book immediately.

Excellent read with lots helpful advice for a newbie
By ecochik
Fresh out of grad school (Master's then PhD), I am now in my first real job. Some of the tips in this book are spot on to my situation -- making the transition from school to first job is tough and this book helped me work through some of those issues. Much of the content seems geared towards a more rigid corporate structured company than my own, but the points are applicable to any company structure. The chapters are short and it's a quick read. Get this book if you're struggling in your first year or so of a new job, or if you just feel like you need a little support/validation to help you through a new transition in your job.
