Part two (chapters four and five) investigates how Christian faith shapes people's involvement in the operations of moral knowing. The guiding concern of each chapter is self-knowledge. Throughout Living with Other People, Melchin contrasts Lonergan's approach with alternative ways of raising questions and wrestling with issues.

Living with Other People is written for educated lay people as well as academics (particularly those interested in Lonergan who feel overwhelmed by his large corpus). Excellent introduction to Ethics

Kenneth Melchin's book is an excellent introduction to Ethics and to the method elaborated by Bernard Lonergan. For those who are interested in an "inside-out" approach to ethics, starting with one's self, this is the book to buy.
You will gain insights into not only your own moral foundations, but will also understand the patterns and habits that make up our social realm.
Original, readable, thought provoking, what more could one ask for!

I was introduced to Lonergan 12 Years ago by Sister (Dr.) Streeter, Prof at Aquinas Institute St Louis. As a Pentecostal, I was intrigued by this Roman Catholic thinker that I knew nothing about. Over a decade later, I am still intrigued. Good Book about a great thinker.

A cheesy book

I don't know what I expected this book to be like. I suppose the title should have warned me of its tone - it varies between farcical and ridiculous.....a cat leading Cass to an important clue, a body preserved in a barrel of rum, Amanda la-ti-da about Cass' visits to the "boarding house", the cheese hidden in a creek, all this interspersed in the unnecessarily-complicated plot. I think I expected it to be tongue-in-cheek. I did not expect to strangle on it. It doesn't help that the narrative is told by two different persons, the reader left to determine which person is speaking. I would not recommend it.

A highly entertaining historical spoof

Mr. Giesser out does himself in the historically based Cheese of Some Importance. A well-known playwright and producer, Mr. Giesser is renown for his dry sense of humor and wildly witty repartee. Who else could have imagined such a bizarre tale involving the abduction of an absurdly large cheese -- that seems to hold the prospect of undoing the Union? I snickered my way through the many surprising twists and turns of the novel all the way to the last tantalizing revelation. Mr. Giesser's colorful descriptions and sassy dialog not only paint a vivid picture of the life and thinking of the time, but set the stage (no pun intended) for a thoroughly entertaining tale of conspiracy, patriotism, propriety (or lack thereof) and murder.

Hijinks, Snappy Repartee and Mayhem in Washington D.C., circa 1815

So, take a dapper, clever, slightly bemused young man and pair him with a bright young English widow with a penchant for tossing off vaguely salacious double entendres and what do you have. Steed and Mrs. Peel from the original "Avengers"? Yes. But now place those two in the humid, swampy backwater that is the U.S. Capital in 1815. Put them in search of a stolen 1,250 pound wheel of cheese, (the theft of which could give rise to a political scandal mighty enough to fracture the fledgling U.S. of A.). If you were to do such a thing you would get this entertaining book.

We start a bit slowly, as our hero narrator, Cassius Lightner, appears to enjoy taking the long way around when it comes to telling a story. The pace freshens when we realize that alternate chapters will be related by Mrs. Amanda Crofton, who is a much more witty, incisive and blunt teller of tales. Between the story itself, the cross-talk between the two leads, the amusing differences in their recountings of the same events, and the rich collection of supporting characters, this qualifies as an entertaining romp.

Odd as it may sound, this book appears to qualify as an "historical mystery". Our Nick and Nora Charles heroes follow the clues, discover the occasional body, and unwind a conspiracy even as they toss off bon mots. Amazingly, the 1815 District of Columbia setting works. The author captures the feel of a great capital city rising from the swamp and the muddy lanes. The era was loaded with fascinating political figures, and they flit through the story. The author has mixed together a modern sensibility and a vaguely old-fashioned writing and speaking style in order to capture the period without wearying the reader, and I felt that it worked.

So, an interesting mystery, an amusing couple, a well developed historical feel, snappy dialogue and a few chuckles. I can't ask for much more than that. Got me back into an old hobby

Photography has always been a hobby of mine, but I never really went into the technical details of the art before. Not for lack of want, but I didn't really know how to start. I found this book and decided that it might be able to help me further my knowledge of my favorite hobby. Yeah, it did. This is a great book - there are a lot of questions that I never really even knew I needed the answers for that this book covers. I never knew the importance of shutter speed before, and I'm not gonna lie, I didn't even really understand aperture before this book either. What's nice is, this book makes these things really easy to understand for the beginner by using simple language and never assuming you know too much. There are a lot of visual aids too, and those helped a ton because I could compare them to my own pictures and gauge if I was doing well or not. Glad I read this, it's sparked my love for photography once again.

Great Book! Highly Recommended!

I just recently got into photography and this is by far the most useful resource that I have found. This book covered everything I needed to know to get started and I haven't looked back. I've been using the techniques from this book to great effect. The fact that I can use it as a reference since I have the Kindle app on my phone is amazing when I am out and about taking pictures. I cannot recommend this book enough if you are looking for something to help your photography.

This is a very helpful & comprehensive overview of DSLR photography. It covers the various parts of a camera, and how each part affects the outcome of a photo. Very Needed Insight

I have read Pastor McVey's book on Spiritual warfare, The Complete Armor of God (Spiritual Warfare for End Time Warriors) and I came away with much insight. It is a really good book. I read about the armor of God in the Bible but Pastor McVey's explanation makes it easy to understand just how we can apply this in our daily lives.

I am currently reading another of his books called Prayer Walking for Spiritual Breakthrough.

His books are a joy to read. No technical jargon, he makes them easy to read for the lay person and therefore it makes it easy to learn from him. I read his books on the Kindle App I have obtained free from Amazon for my iPad. I can't wait to read more of his books and they are not lengthy, which makes it nice to read them and realize the intention of them without having to read hundreds of pages.

Also, Pastor McVey is not greedy. I have paid $.99 for each of his books and no one can say that is too much. It is graciousness on his part and shows he believes in educating the world spiritually.

Powerful

Wow! What a powerful little book. I feel as if I could stand up with the best of them in Gods Armor and defend against the devil and all his minions. This is a must read book. They say "big things come in small packages" well this is one of them. I will be posting all the different parts of the Armor of God on my wall to remind me not to forget it each morning when I wake up. I will use it to defend my family and any one else the devil decides to intimidate or harm.

This was a great book. I have always known about the armor of God in Ephesians, but didn't quit know how to use it properly. Now I do, thank you! Learning about the offensive armor was very eye opening. Again, thank you for your knowledge. I highly recommend this book to every christian.

I've had better, but a useful supplement

Excellent format and quick read. Not as strong as shelf life pediatrics or obgyn, but has additional outline in the back for quick review. If you are studying for the IM shelf, this is a decent short resource for the first week of the rotation as it hits on some integral points. The questions are too easy / straight forward and the scope too narrow to rely on for comprehensive shelf prep, however. It fits in white coat pocket and can provide entertainment on a slow service, but do not substitute for IM essentials / MKSAP or UWorld.

Studying for the internal medicine shelf is difficult. Lets face it, you don't have much time to do anything outside of the hospital anyways and studying is definitely not on the list of fun things to do. When you're faced with this situation, you need a resource that is comprehensive, reliable, and quick. THIS IS IT! I used this book throughout the clerkship and read the chapters one by one. A case here and chapter there. Took the test timed then went through the high yield information before the exam. This was perfect. It was a great supplement to my learning and it got me the score I needed to shine! These guys created an amazing book. I wish I knew about this for my other clerkships. Good luck everyone!
